The Whittakers are three siblings named Lorraine, Timmy, and Ray. Their parents were double first cousins, The Sun reported - first cousins, twice, because they share both sets of grandparents.
The genetic complications have caused a host of behavioral issues
Laita was first acquainted with the West Virginia family in 2004 when he took pictures of them.
He decided to come back years in 2020
In an interview with Koncrete podcast, recorded before Christmas, Laita recalled the most bizarre moments with the family.
'It was out of control,' he said.
'There's these people walking around and their eyes are going in different directions and they are barking at us.
'And [this] one guy, you'd look at him in the eye or say anything and he would just scream and go running away and his pants would fall around his ankles.'
Laita said the family have received a surge in interest since he first photographed and then filmed them. He said he needed a police escort to visit.
Laita recalled the building up of his relationship with the inbred family, particularly with family members named Ray, Betty, Kenneth, Ray, Timmy and Lorraine.
The first time he approached them was in the early 2000s when he was initially met by 'protective' neighbors with a shotgun.
'They don't like people coming to ridicule these people,' Laita said on the podcast.
At the time, Laita wanted to take photos of the Whittakers for his book, 'Created Equal.' The book told stories of diverse cultures in the US.
While he wasn't initially welcomed, he was eventually allowed to snap a few shots and even gifted some to the family.
One of the filmmaker's latest videos from 2021 showed the family's rundown conditions, with the group living in a small and overcrowded home with several animals.

Years ago through some church work I was doing, I was briefly acquainted with a woman whose father and grandfather were the same person. She was a genetic mess and made her meagre living as a prostitute in a horrible rundown neighborhood. She had children who were not the product of incest, so while some of the bad stuff was diluted, they all had their issues. I was a young man then and, to say the least, I had my eyes opened to a sad and tragic world that I had no idea existed.

If you’ve not watched “Soft white underbelly” on Youtube, it’s amazing. It’s hard to watch sometimes, as the stories tend to be very real, and the child abuse described by the “working girls” talking about their childhoods can make you nauseous sometimes, but it’s great for showing what happens to kids with bad childhoods. Also, Mark has a GoFundMe (or similar) where he gives these folks money.

I wonder if the “sexual revolution” which started years ago in which married men and women both were having affairs has contributed to the lowering IQ and mental instability of so many people in our nation? A couple of decades ago, it was men and women meeting at their children’s sporting events, having an affair, and then the resulting child was assumed to be the husband’s child. Then, in small communities, the children go to school together while not realizing they are half-siblings, date and eventually produce another child that is a product of unknown family gene-mixing. Now, there is no marriage but instead “hook-ups” where no one knows who the father actually is for resulting the child.
I know that decades ago, one had to have a blood-test prior to getting married to make sure than the couple were not related although they coined it as testing for STD’s. A county official told me that was the actual reason for blood tests, although she might have been joking.
Of course, the decreasing IQ levels are more likely to be from uncontrolled illegal aliens from low IQ nations streaming across our borders and producing children who have no structure in their lives and provided no education. But the other possibility may have some merit.
That’s great funds are being raised.
They will need an experienced and trustworthy Conservator.
