NOW BIRD FLU ...

Feb 02, 2005 - FreeMarketNews.com

by Tim Brown

Is “bird flu” the next SARS?

The fear of so-called bird flu is growing in Southeast Asia. Thailand and Cambodia in addition to Vietnam have had cases of bird flu in humans. Flights between Hong Kong and Vietnam are broadcasting warnings of bird flu to passengers aboard the flight. It is rumored that China has cordoned off a strip along the Vietnam border as a buffer against the virus.

The SARS virus debilitated the Asian economy. Business travel and exhibitions were cancelled. Many airlines cancelled service to and from Asian destinations. Areas heavily dependant upon tourism were especially hurt. Even local restaurants and shopping malls were virtually deserted. There were cases of western trade shows refusing to allow Asian business people to attend from the suspected areas.

SARS hit China especially hard – and was thought to have mutated there into a form that could be transmitted between humans. The bird flu is worst in Vietnam - twelve deaths have occurred there since December 30, though all are said to have been caused by bird-to-human infection.

The biggest fear is that the bird flu virus could mutate into a form easily transmitted between humans. Most cases involving humans so far have been traced to back to birds and there is no sign of mutation. However, a report in The New England Journal of Medicine documents what may be a case of avian flu transmission.

The Journal reports that both Thai and U.S. investigators believe that while an 11-year-old Thai girl died from exposure to a sick chicken, her mother and aunt – who also came down with the illness – were not exposed to the bird, but only the daughter. The mother died as well. This would indicate a human-to-human mutation.

In an attempt to quell the problem, Ho Chi Minh city has called for the slaughter of 210,000 ducks. In addition they will ban raising ducks for one year. The migration of birds is commonly thought to be the origination of bird flu.

The SARS outbreak less than two years ago in Asia created fear in................Full Article www.FreeMarketNews.com

To be blunt, this "scare" is a bit overblown: There are only one or two cases of people-to-people transmission in the last 2-3 years.

WHO has been the source of much of the anxiety:some of which may be attributable to budgetary posturing.

This scare is overblown, just like SARS was, especially by some people here at free republic. There was one poster, I think MotherAbigail, who would pretty much only post sars threads.

People got all hot and bothered that this would bring about TEOTWAWKI and it would be like the great flue of 1918 all over again. Unfortunately for them, their eagerness for a new plague failed to take into account we are a thousand times more advanced in the fields of medicine, science, transportation and communication than we were back then. The ability to indentify and treat these things can not be compared to what was available 80 years ago.

Kind of like that old "Of you don't get a flu shot you could DIE!!!!!!" followed by "OMG NO flu vaccine!!!!" hysteria. Oooopsie, no shots; no epidemic...

Then why worry? Let it go.

Those of us who are interested in emerging diseases in the far east will read the articles. If there's anything to fear, I'm sure your government will tell you.

After all, SARS was nothing, right? Let it go.

Thanks for the information. That's drastic, and people may starve. For them, it's the end of the world as they know it. The Vietnamese aren't doing that to save America from H5N1--they're doing it to save their own country.

Don't tell flashbunny. After all, it has nothing to do with us. /sarc

ok chicken little.

How many times to you have to be wrong before you admit it?

Or will you just be like all the other art bell types and jump on the next big outbreak, completely ignoring the fact that all your dire predictions were WRONG???

Yeah, let it go, so you never get called on your scaremongering that doesn't materialize in the threats you claim.

Sounds like liberal tactics. Calling you on your failures isn't allowed, because you must be allowed to do your 'important work' of nashing your teeth and preaching of impending doom than never happens.
