It's time for a little truth in advertising. The American Civil Liberties Union wants to restrict Americans' civil liberties. ACLU lawyers insist that any display of religious symbols on government property "is violating this country's principles of religious freedom."

Our First Amendment says:"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF..." The ACLU hates this second phrase, and, with the help of elite judges, the group aims to destroy the protections it affords.

The group views most civic expressions of faith as a slippery slope to theocracy. It's leaders hate and fear: George Washington's "So help me God," Jefferson's "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," the US Supreme Court's "God save this honorable court," our currency's "In God We Trust," and the pledge of allegiance's "One Nation Under God."

So, what will this so-called civil rights organization say if the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, scheduled to begin in D.C. in November 2006, features certain dreaded phrases from King's "I Have a Dream" speech? "make justice a reality for all of God's children."..."the day when all of God's children will be able to sing"..."we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

If these phrases are ultimately excluded, why stop there? Why not remove all religious referrences in our nation's capitol city? For starters, the Washington monument cornerstone contains a Bible, and a phrase on its top that says "praise be God" in latin. They will also find the words "altar of God" on the grounds of the Jefferson memorial, "this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom" on the Lincoln memorial, "God has favored our undertakings" on the east entrance of the U.S. Senate chamber, "Nature is the art of God," on the Library of Congress, and "Our liberty of worship is not a concession nor a privilege but an inherent right" on the Reagan building.

The ACLU knows it stands outside the mainstream on this issue. The more than 75 percent of Americans who believe religious messages should be permitted to remain on government property are ignorant or selfishly narrow-minded.

The ACLU knows it's views conflict with America's founding principles and those leaders who held our nation together during times of crisis.

"It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favors."

"Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever."

"I believe I am an humble servant in the hands of our Heavenly Father; I desire that all my words and acts may be according to His will."

"As Commander-in-Chief, I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States. Throughout the centuries men of many faiths and diverse origins have found in the Sacred Book words of wisdom, counsel, and inspiration. It is a fountain of strength and now, as always, an aid in attaining the highest aspirations of the human soul."

These phrases weren't uttered by the "American Taliban" or the "radical religious right", as ACLU members might say. They come from Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and FDR, in that order.
