The Great Ape Project [Barf]

Posted on 01/08/2006 3:34:23 PM PST by skandalon

We demand the extension of the community of equals to include all great apes: human beings, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orang-utans.

The community of equals is the moral community within which we accept certain basic moral principles or rights as governing our relations with each other and enforceable at law. Among these principles or rights are the following:

1. The Right to Life The lives of members of the community of equals are to be protected. Members of the community of equals may not be killed except in very strictly defined circumstances, for example, self-defense.

2. The Protection of Individual Liberty Members of the community of equals are not to be arbitrarily deprived of their liberty; if they should be imprisoned without due legal process, they have the right to immediate release. The detention of those who havenot been convicted of any crime, or of those who are not criminally liable, should be allowed only where it can be shown to be for their own good, or necessary to protect the public from a member of the community who wouldclearly be a danger to others if at liberty. In such cases, members of the community of equals must have the right to appeal, either directly or, if they lack the relevant capacity, through an advocate, to a judicial tribunal.

3. The Prohibition of Torture The deliberate infliction of severe pain on a member of the community of equals, either wantonly or for an alleged benefit to others, is regarded as torture, and is wrong.

Just what we need some more ersatz rights! I was just looking up some info about Richard Dawkins and found, by his association, this group proposing extending rights to the great apes.

Ok, in order to grant those rights all of you in the Great Ape Project must sell all your possessions, including clothing, and go live as a human "Great Ape" colony in Africa for 5 years. You may have NO human interaction NO use of any goods, services or materials inverted by wicked evil man. Put your actions where your insanely hysteric mouthes are "Great Apes".

Self defense? What happened to the right of privacy? Or does the protection extend to apes but not children?

Well, at least they're against abortion.

To raise apes to the level of humans ios to reduce humans to the level of apes. It's merely a variation on "A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy" ... and is a prescription for an untermensch in a gas chamber.

Bonobos are good, but I would not consider them great apes.

Raising A to the same level as B is not the same as lowering B to the same level as A.

4. Humans shall not presume to speak for their equals, the chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans, rendering principles 1 through 3 null and void.

I'm sure that old guy who was recently relieved of his nose and testicles by a rampaging chimp would appreciate this.

3. A Great Ape must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law

They remember their past and plan for their future.

So does my beagle, that's why he lifts his leg when peeing.

Sounds like a program being proposed by a human-like or ape-like specimen with the intelligence level of a cockroack.

Well, this is silly but harmless. But how do you all feel about pets? It seems to me that animals raised with humans ought to have some limited status as 'people'. Once we create expectations of certain behavior on our part in them, we're obliged to deliver.

OK, that's way too abstract: what I mean is if somebody steals a pet cat that's learned to trust people and sells it to a medical research lab to be experimented on, isn't there some crime there beyond mere theft of property and distressing of the cat's owner?

Yes, it is. Particularly if A is incomparable (possessing an immortal soul) to B (which does not).

Yea and oranges are orange and apples are green, but that doesn't mean they aren't both fruit.
