CNN Perplexed by Calm U.S. Public
FreeMarketProject.org ^ | March 20, 2006 | Ken Shepherd

“We’ve fanned the flames of fear about this stuff,” said CNN’s Jack Cafferty on March 18. He was talking about bird flu, and his admission just confirmed the Free Market Project’s ongoing analysis of media coverage.

The “In the Money” co-host’s comments came as the show’s panel looked at “Stock of the Week” Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN), which has seen a 20-percent loss in value recently from overseas bird flu scares. Co-host Jennifer Westhoven marveled at the American public’s apparent nonchalance about the H5N1 avian flu virus.

“I’m amazed that Americans at this point are really fairly unconcerned” about bird flu and mad cow disease, the Bryn Mawr alumna confessed, noting that a drop in foreign sales of Tyson chicken has depressed company stock.

While the National Chicken Council stresses that American poultry is safe to eat, the CNN anchors failed to remind viewers of that fact. Guest panelist Allen Wastler urged investors to wait until Tyson stock “pounds down a little bit more” before snatching up cheaper shares, “because people always eat meat.”

Why panic on their word? There is no preparation that can be done to prevent an outbreak since there is no known single strain that has been identified from which a vaccine can be developed.

This is the same reason why from year to year some people get flu shots and still get the flu. Viruses are mutating machines and it is impossible to characterize a specific strain until it causes an outbreak.

And it's being helped along by Oprah ..

"An Oprah Show investigation right here in America. The dirty secret nobody wants to talk about: Thirty-seven million people live this way. On location with CNN reporter Anderson Cooper, Maria Shriver and Gayle King."

"Invisible Lives Anderson Cooper, Maria Shriver and Gayle King visit families who are struggling to survive. See what it's really like to live in poverty."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, I've heard that she generously offered assistance and finances to help poor women in a housing project here in Chicago, and finally stopped it because they became so greedy and into their "entitlements."
I just imagine the quotes.
Anderson: "And Oprah, these people cant even afford Gucci Loafers!"
Oprah: "I havent felt this bad since french racists locked me out of Hermes"
“I’m amazed that Americans at this point are really fairly unconcerned” about bird flu and mad cow disease...
I remember a story about a certain Chicken Little who repeatedly ran around hollering "the sky is falling." I also remember that over and over again nothing happened. In the end everyone stopped listening to poor old Chicken Little.
Didn't CNN have specials about the end of the world as we know it due to Y2K..... why worry about something we have no control over? These idiots just keep flaming away - no one pays attention to them anyway !! They just haven't figured that out yet!
I work in the TV news business. No, not for CNN, locale stuff. Those numbers are from Nielson. Dont be afraid of the facts! FNC is still the dominant news network when it comes to moulding opinion. FNC fans watch for longer durations because FNC is opinion-heavy, lots of analysis, pundits, etc. CNN scores an overall higher audience because it gears its programming to blurt out basic facts in short periods of time, so it attracts people who are on the go, who dont have a lot of time to sit down and watch anything in-depth.
The Airport thing: Airport coverage isnt included in Nielson stats, nor any other business that may have televisions streaming news channels. You cant gage for audience since you have no idea who's stopping to watch and who's just walking by.
I'm not one bit afraid of facts. I just do not rely on one source. I am well acquainted with Neilsen. I was a Neilsen household until last June when I moved out of CA.
If I had a Neilson box, I'd watch nothing but South Park and NCIS marathons.
I think if you backed out all of the CNN feeds at every airport in the country they would actually be below FNC.
Not to mention that as stated, FNC retains it's viewers 4 times as long. Whoever's turning on CNN clearly can't stand it for very long.
The "Airport Channel" is insignificant anyway, since it's target audience are people sitting around at airports the channel is carried in. I've seen that channel at the airport in Minneapolis, and it's nothing more than snippets of CNN and Headline News.
Fox records higher hourly ratings because the average Fox viewer watches 4 times as long as the average CNN viewer, but CNN still beats Fox in total number of Americans tuning in over the course of the day.
Largely because CNN is wholly unwatchable beyond a 15-minute cume period.
Nobody believes a drunken has-been like Jack Cafferty--that's why.
If I wanted to hear a drunken old bastard spouting off a bunch of psychobabble, I'd go to the local watering hole.
