You don't have to go through the District to get from NC to PA. Look at a map. If you don't have an atlas, go buy one.

taking 81 would be way out of your way then.

i'd stick with 95 to 301 back to 95, as brityank suggested,
if you have time. if your in more of a hurry, just take 95
but go east on 495, like patton suggested. just watch the
signs on 495. stay on the beltway (495) going into md, don't
go through d.c.

Thanks.

How much time does taking 301 add to the trip?

I *do* like going off the interstate, but also want to spend as little time in MD as possible.

45 minutes. But if you hit an accident on 95, you'll save many hours by taking 301.

nittany has it right. plus there have been alot of changes
where 95 dumps onto the beltway..."the mixing bowl" ugh!
... and there's a new span of the wilson bridge too.

on 301 you'll go through a big chunk of md, but it's more
remote/rural, alot less traffic and a prettier drive too.

George:

AR-15's automatic are legal in PA. BUT your N.C. permit will NOT be legal in PA. Whether you are a resident or not, to have a concealed permit, you have to have one from PA.

What your talking about is a Federal permit and only law enforcement have those....so you'll have to get one when you get here...

It is my understanding that NC and PA recognize each others' concealed carry permits.

Here's the NC link:

http://www.ncdoj.com/DocumentStreamerClient?directory=Publications&file=listofstates.pdf

So NC govt site says that NC and PA are reciprocal.

Here's the PA link:

http://www.attorneygeneral.gov/uploadedFiles/Crime/NC_Reciprocity_Agreement.pdf

Anybody else care to comment?

When you come thru Richmond look for the cut over to RT 301 North around Bowling Green. It will go by Ft A.P Hill the big military base, slows around Waldorf MD and when you get to RT 50 go east across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and then north right into Wilmington and other paces PA south east. If your location is not so far east in PA continue on RT 201 north until you intersect I 695 around Baltimore. You can take the FT McHenry tunnel or the eastern bridge but get on I 95 north to Phily. You avoid DC totally and going thru DC slows that down. I found the FT McHenry tunnel under Baltimore harbor faster and the second exit after that is 95 north.

If you can avoid the I 495 around DC since traffic can be awful except at certain times. Unless you are familiar with the area. If you do want to travel the I 495 beltway then take 95 north from Richmond continue until you hit I 495 head east over to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge The new span is open and take 495 around MD to 95 north to Baltimore. I would suggest that if you take 495 around MD that you get off at the Baltimore Washington Pkwy or 295 north . That exit is before I 95 and will take you to the FT Mchenry tunnel faster.
