Duncan Hunter Says "Nuts" To Those Who Demand His Surrender

Presidential candidate Congressman Duncan Hunter did the unexpected today--unexpected by everyone but those who know the character of the man.

With the announcement of a press conference today, the mainstream media and political pundits went wild over the probability of Hunter dropping out of the race, especially after being denied entry into two consecutive debates this weekend.

They were wrong.

In December of 1944, the 101st Airborne Division led by General Anthony McAuliffe was trapped by the Nazis in the town of Bastogne, Belgium during the "Battle of the Bulge". With no hope of escape, the Germans demanded a surrender. General McAuliffe, who understood what it meant to hold on at all costs, answered the Third Reich's surrender demand with a now famous response--"nuts".

When it looked darkest, this one act of defiance fueled hope and resolve. The US troops held on, were rescued and won the war in Europe.

Some 63 years later we beheld something similar.

With a hostile media and political adversaries salivating, Duncan Hunter stood before a microphone and gave what was tantamount to a "nuts" response to all those who demanded his surrender from this race.

It is uncertain how long the congressman can battle, but he has made it clear that surrender is not an option at this point. This says much about the former Army Ranger--he will not quit. This also says much about Duncan Hunter's message--there is no compromise. This alone separates him from the rest of the Republican field.

We are amazed when someone stands against such great odds and defies his enemies to make him quit, refusing to change his principles. This is not something a politician would do, but a great man would.

There is nothing nuts about this, it is simply heroic.

Yes, because the comparison would be to Romney. Hey, if Fred can change on campaign finance reform, illegal immigration, abortion why can’t Mitt?! The irony.

None other than Patton’s secretary served Duncan Hunter! Hunter exudes leadership and has always proven he has what it takes.

Please Duncan, don’t give up! Conservatives have yet to have a really good look at you! Push the best issues of the top five Republicans together, and there is you! I’ve felt this way for years before you announced your candidacy, and you need to stay put!

So who put a gun to your head and dragged you into this thread, eh Petro?

No one did. I came to the thread to read it, not expecting so embarrassing and absurd a comparison between Hunter Duncan and Gen. McAuliffe.

If the comparison had been between your boy Fred and McAuliffe you would be applauding.

I wouldn’t dream of it, I can tell that you’re more than happy in your own putrid little sewer line.

We’re done here Petro, have a nice day sneering about Duncan Hunter, whose shoes you’re not fit to shine.

Hey Petro?

That blank line is for you to get the last word in, I know you’re psychologically compelled to have it, so I’ll just leave that blank space open for you.

Hey, it’s the kinda guy I am.

Q - How can you tell when Fred Thompson is excited?
A - It’s not easy. First you have to catch him awake.

“Nonsense, I’ve never seen anyone for Thompson or Hunter that wouldn’t go for the other. They’d make a great team.”

I ABSOLUTELY would NOT “go” for Thompson, ever, and I would drop any support for Duncan Hunter should he team up with Fred on any ticket, in any order.

Exactly Kimberly, while Duncan Hunter was already out there on the campaign trail fighting his way to where he is right now, Fred was sitting on his ass waiting for the right media moment to arrive when he thought he would triumphantly come riding to the rescue of the GOP.

That only happens in the movies or on TV, which is probably why Thompson thought it should have worked out for him that way.

Hunter is in this come Hell or high water, and that’s because he intends to finish the mission, one way or the other.

God Bless America, and Duncan Hunter!

..redgirl, at this point anybody but Huckabee in NH would be ok. I prefer McCain if DH couldn’t win because I think that NH is where his train stops IMHO...

If the Repubs lose in 2008, Hunter might be the man in 2012.

ok, now i’ve seen two, although knowledgeable voters base support on the issues, and not on when someone enters a race.

My support for Duncan Hunter IS based on the issues, and it’s also based on my belief that Hunter is not a lazy man, he’s been out there in the trenches doing the hard work, and hasn’t let long odds, adversity or the sneers and ridicule of others slow him down one damn bit.
