Having expansionist dreams and having the means to accomplish them are two different things. The fact is that if we had stayed neutral, we would not have been attacked in 1941. A smart policy would have been to build up the military, especially navy, just in case an attack did come our way, and of course military intelligence would be vital, too.

I beg to differ... If Japan had the means to go Hawaii and bomb Pearl Harbor and go to Alaska I'm pretty sure they could have come to the mainland US.

By the way they could have declared war on us for any reason.. Not because we intervened.
