Crime in Chicago has been in the news lately, but it is nothing new. Historically it dates back over a hundred years. From the tale of the Gray Wolves

The 1890s Chicago City Council was notorious for corrupt political practices orchestrated by a faction of its aldermen known as the Gray Wolves. So named because they were viewed as preying upon the defenseless public, the Gray Wolves were led by First Ward aldermen “Bathhouse” John Coughlin and “Hinky Dink” Mike Kenna, and Johnny Powers of the Nineteenth Ward. These elected officials were not only skilled at trading votes for favors, but once in office they excelled in making municipal decisions to profit themselves financially.

TO the present, it is a compelling historical subject.

Wiretap: Burris Offered To Write Ex-Gov. A Check Senator Suggested Contribution To Rod Blagojevich Before He Was Appointed, Later Decided Against It CHICAGO (CBS)

Sen. Roland Burris was recorded on an FBI wiretap suggesting that he could write a check to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s campaign before the ousted governor appointed Burris to the Senate, reports CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago.

The details of the conversation emerged after a federal judge said Tuesday he would allow the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee to hear a federal wiretap of former Blagojevich’s brother, Rob, having a fund-raising conversation with Burris.

Sources tell WBBM the wiretapped phone conversation occurred on Nov. 18 while Blagojevich was still governor and before he named Burris to President Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat.

Sources say that on the tape, Burris suggests that he could contribute, or have associates contribute, money to the Blagojevich campaign. Burris also expresses desire to be appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Thanks,Fiscon will keep with the Chicago crime information.

How ACORN works financially:

So, what ACORN has done is created a sophisticated network of sister organizations and this network is actually run, financially at least, by CCI. All of this makes tracking down the money and the criminality very difficult. This is all by design. The scam here is so complicated that it means the public at large will likely get confused before understanding the scam.

Ald. Carothers, developer accused of corruption (Fitzgerald indictment)

Ald. Isaac Carothers (29th), a staunch ally of Mayor Richard Daley, was indicted today on charges he accepted about $40,000 in improvements to his residence as well as meals and tickets to sporting events in exchange for backing a major project by a developer.

The developer, Calvin Boender, was also indicted.

Carothers, 54, was charged with four counts of wire and mail fraud and one count each of accepting a bribe and filing a false federal income tax return.

Boender was charged with four counts of wire and mail fraud, two counts of obstruction of justice, two misdemeanor counts of violating federal campaign finance laws and one count of paying a bribe. According to federal authorities, Boender sought to transform the city’s largest undeveloped tract of land, a 50-acre former rail yard and industrial site in Carothers’ West Side ward.

So FItz knew he was already willing to cooperate....Wonder who he is going to give up!?!?!

Ald. Isaac Carothers wore wire for a year

INDICTED | Daley ally charged with fraud and bribery despite reported cooperation with feds in probe of officials, developers,isaac-carothers-wire-chicago-politics-daley.article

The document identifies Carothers as “Public Official A” — with clear identifiers pointing to him, including a reference to one of his family members running for Congress in 2004.

The government filing says Carothers, 54, had been “consensually recording conversations with individuals suspected of engaging in ongoing criminal conduct.”

“These recorded conversations include meetings Public Official A has had with other public officials and real estate developers. The government expects Public Official A to continue his cooperation into late May 2009.”

There’s no indication where Carothers’ year of cooperation led.

His lawyer, Larry Beaumont, would not comment on the unsealed document. “We expect we will plead not guilty at the arraignment and look forward to trial,” Beaumont said.

It’s not clear how many of his colleagues Carothers might have ensnared. He has been somewhat radioactive since the Sun-Times reported last year he was under federal scrutiny. Colleagues have been suspicious he has been wearing a wire, City Hall sources say.

WOnder if the recently indicted alderman/friend of Daley will have anything to add to this one.

City pension officials have been hit with subpoenas from a federal grand jury trying to determine how they decided to invest $68 million with a start-up company co-owned by Mayor Daley’s nephew.

The grand jury issued the subpoenas Wednesday, nearly two months after city pension officials refused to comply with similar subpoenas issued by the city of Chicago’s inspector general, David Hoffman.

Hoffman said Friday that he and federal investigators are now jointly investigating the pension fund investments with DV Urban Realty Partners, co-owned by Daley’s nephew Robert Vanecko and one of the mayor’s top African-American allies, Allison S. Davis.

U.S. attorney says business could help cut murder rate, hire teens as interns

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald stood before a room packed with business officials Thursday and asked them to do something they probably have never considered:

Hire felons

Not exactly the kind of request you’d expect from the area’s top federal law enforcement official, who’s better known for locking up criminals.

But Fitzgerald told the audience that while law enforcement targets the worst of the worst, the community needs to get more involved — especially the business community — to help drive down murder numbers and keep kids out of gangs.

Fitzgerald, speaking at a City Club of Chicago luncheon, said on any given day there are 4,000 Chicago Police officers on the streets and an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 gang-bangers in the city.

“How in the world can we incarcerate our way out of the problem when we are outnumbered that much?” Fitzgerald said.

Part of the answer, he said, lies with corporations, who can help sponsor after-school programs or enlist teenagers from the projects to be summer interns — or even hire felons.

With the indictment of former New Orleans City Councilwoman Renee Gill Pratt’s on racketeering and money laundering charges, murmurs of discontent with U.S. Attorney Jim Letten have begun to emerge from several quarters in the local black community. The accusation that the region’s senior prosecutor has disproportionately pursued corruption allegations in the African-American community continues to be levied.

When Senator Mary Landrieu recommended the reappointment of Letten, a career prosecutor but also a GOP appointee of President George W. Bush, Danatus King, president of the New Orleans Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told Bayoubuzz and that not enough consultation had been done with Black organizations over whether Letten served the needs of an area with such a large African-American population. “I think because of the makeup of the judicial district that Mr. Letten serves that would have been desirable, but it didn’t happen.”

The Auchi-Rezko-Obama connection came to public attention with federal marshals pounding on the door of Tony Rezko’s Wilmette Chicago mansion in the early morning of January 28, 2008. They hauled Rezko to jail after his bail was revoked for concealing a $3.5 million Auchi loan from the court. The Times outlines the story in two sentences. It should be of tremendous interest to the American public and the world.

But there is more to this story than run-of-the mill political corruption. Nadhmi Auchi is alleged to have a long affiliation with Iraqi Baathism and Saddam Hussein—which his attorneys deny. How close were they? According to a 1960 US Embassy report, Auchi was convicted along with Saddam by an Iraqi court for his part in a failed 1959 assassination attempt against then-Iraqi Prime Minister Qassim. For his crime, Auchi earned a sentence of “three years rigorous imprisonment.”

BO better watch his back:

More from the Free Press:

The UK Guardian, in an article still posted on their site, directly contradicts Auchi’s claim to have left Baath, writing:

Nadhmi Shakir Auchi was born in Baghdad on 11 June 1937. As a student he was involved in the campaign which culminated in the uprising of 1958 against British rule. After the Baathist coup in 1963, Auchi came into the open as a supporter of the pan-Arab party and built a career in the procurement department of the Iraqi Oil Ministry. Over a decade he built up a vast network of contacts within Europe and the Far East. In the mid-1970s this allowed him to set up his own business, working as an intermediary for Western companies wanting a piece of Iraq’s lucrative oil action.

In Republic of Fear, Kanan Makiya points out that there were only 830 “active” members of Iraq’s Arab Baath Socialist Party in 1963. In The Old Social Classes and the Revolutionary Movement of Iraq Hannah Batatu points out participants in the Qassim assassination were privileged within the 1960s Baathist hierarchy. Moreover there were two Baathist coups in 1963. February 8, 1963 against Qasim—and November 18, 1963 by Baathist Army officers against the Baathist militia. Saddam’s rise to power began in 1964. After insinuating his control throughout the security apparatus of the Party and State he would finally take full control 15 years later in 1979.

There are claims that a brother, a cousin, or two brothers of Auchi were killed by Saddam. This story is difficult to pin down but may refer to Saddam’s final 1979 coup which was accompanied with the videotaped purge and execution of 66 top Baathists in order to ensure the loyalty of the remainder. Auchi left Iraq about 1979.

Forty-three years after his conviction in the Qassim assassination attempt, Auchi was convicted of a different type of crime. A French court in 2003 convicted Auchi of taking kickbacks in the Elf-Aquitane bribery scandal. The Guardian –in an article Auchi’s lawyers take credit for forcing off the web under threat of litigation — called the scandal: “the biggest fraud inquiry in Europe since the Second World War... Elf became a private bank for executives who spent £200 million on political favours, mistresses, jewelry, fine art, villas and apartments.” BBC described the case as exposing “a moral vacuum…at the heart of France.”

lot’s more at website including:

A February 28, 2008 Sun-Times article describes another part of Auchi’s 2004 Chicago visit:

On a spring day in 2004, Nadhmi Auchi, one of the world’s richest men, flew in to Midway Airport on a private jet. Met by a welcoming party that included Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn (there at the request of the Blagojevich administration) and businessman Tony Rezko, Auchi was brought to a downtown hotel where he was the guest of honor at a reception hosted by Blagojevich.

The Iraqi-born billionaire — who lives in London — had come to Chicago on business. He would go on to invest nearly $170 million in a prime piece of vacant land in the South Loop — 62 acres along the Chicago River that Rezko wanted to develop….

Auchi has sought to distance himself from Rezko — but still plans to develop the 62 acres at Roosevelt and Clark. Asked about the project, Pepper referred questions to a Feb. 12 story posted on the Web site

“As negative information about Rezko came to light last year, GMH moved to buy out Rezko’s interest” in the project, Newsmax reported. “In July 2007, Rezko sold the majority of his interest.”

That is how Newsmax reports on Auchi since Ruddy’s 2005-2006 “conversion.” But the office of US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald sees it differently. In their Motion for Issuance for an Arrest Warrant against Rezko, prosecutors argue:

“(a)ccording to Northern Trust bank records, on April 4, 2007, a bank account, (the ‘MMDA account’) held at Northern trust by the law firm of Freeborn and Peters (Freeborn) received an incoming wire transfer of approximately $3,499,471 from a bank in Beirut, Lebanon. The originator of the wire transfer was identified as General Mediterranean Holdings.…”

Prosecutors consume the next 10 pages detailing the various persons, many with criminal ties, to whom Rezko transferred the money. They then write:

“Of the remaining money from the $3.5 million wire from Beirut, Lebanon, nearly all of it went to Rezko-related lawyers.”

Prosecutors also detail another GMH wire transfer for $200,000 on July 25, 2007 which they indicate “was also apparently for Rezko’s legal fees….”

Newsmax somehow missed all of this.

6) Carter-Ruck asserts: “Our client flatly and categorically denies any wrong doing in relation to matters that led to his conviction in France. Our client has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights for a ruling that the trial resulting in his conviction breached his fundamental right to a fair trial. He is also suing Elf Oil for dragging him unwittingly into the scandal.”
C-R thus confirms Auchi is a convicted criminal in the eyes of French law. The astute reader will note that challenging the fairness of a trial is different than proclaiming innocence. The challenge to Elf also implies an admission that Auchi was dragged “into the scandal” albeit “unwittingly”.

Here’s how the UK Independent May 4, 2008 describes it:

A legal battle between the two erupted after Auchi, an Iraqi-born British citizen, received a 15-month suspended sentence and a £1.5m fine after being convicted of corruption. French investigators found that he had received $2m (£1m) in illegal commissions in the Elf Aquitaine oil scandal.

Several senior executives of the company were jailed over their part in the affair. The investigators claimed that Auchi had paid bribes to Elf. As a result of the ruling, Total took legal action against him in France.

Then C-R closes by reiterating several of the points it has already made:

7) Carter-Ruck asserts: “With regard to the article by Nick Cohen of the Guardian, following legal action taken by our client against Guardian News and Media Limited also agreed to pay a substantial sum in relation to our client’s costs. In particular:
(a) Carter-Ruck asserts: “as stated above, it is untrue that our client had any involvement with Saddam Hussein.”
If so, then Auchi’s lawyers would logically have to claim:

· The 1960 US Embassy report: “untrue.”

· Numerous reports that Auchi was involved in the purchase of Italian frigates for the Iraqi Navy during the Iran-Iraq war: “untrue.”

· Money laundering: “untrue.”

Who is to be believed? A twice-convicted criminal and ex-con whose lawyers shout “untrue” and attempt to silence those who say otherwise— or the dozens of investigative journalists, European and American government officials, and UN investigators who have dug into aspects of Auchi’s story.

(b) Carter-Ruck asserts: “it is untrue that our client was involved in bribing ‘fabulously corrupt leaders of postwar Italy.’”
In 2003, in one of the articles forced off the Internet by Carter-Ruck’s threats, Nick Cohen of the UK Guardian wrote:

“Allow me to introduce you to Nadhmi Auchi. He was charged in the 1950s with being an accomplice of Saddam Hussein, when the future tyrant was acquiring his taste for blood. He was investigated in the 1980s for his part in alleged bribes to the fabulously corrupt leaders of post-war Italy.”

Under threat of litigation, the Guardian admitted to “inaccuracies” in the articles. But is it an “inaccuracy” to acknowledge that the twice-convicted criminal and ex-con Auchi was indeed “investigated in the 1980s”?

Lucy Komisar details the contents of “a confidential 2001 report by Kroll, the international investigative agency…commissioned by Kuwait after the Gulf War in an attempt to locate Iraqi assets it could claim as compensation.”

Komisar explains:

Same source, too relative, must copy this too:

British-Iraqi billionaire lent millions of dollars to Barack Obama’s fundraiser just weeks before an imprudent land deal that has returned to haunt the presidential contender, an investigation by The Times discloses.

The money transfer raises the question of whether funds from Nadhmi Auchi, one of Britain’s wealthiest men, helped Mr Obama buy his mock Georgian mansion in Chicago.

A company related to Mr Auchi, who has a conviction for corruption in France, registered the loan to Mr Obama’s bagman Antoin “Tony” Rezko on May 23 2005. Mr Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million.

Three weeks later, Mr Obama bought a house on the city’s South Side while Mr Rezko’s wife bought the garden plot next door from the same seller on the same day, June 15.…

Mrs Rezko’s purchase and sale of the land to Mr Obama raises many unanswered questions.

It is unclear how Mrs Rezko could have afforded the down payment of $125,000 and a $500,000 mortgage for the original $625,000 purchase of the garden plot at 5050 South Greenwood Ave.

In a sworn statement a year later, Mrs Rezko said she got by on a salary of $37,000 and had $35,000 assets. Mr Rezko told a court he had “no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets, no unencumbered assets [and] is significantly in arrears on many of his obligations.”

Asked if she used money from her husband to buy the land next to Mr Obama’s house, she said: “I can’t answer these questions, I’m sorry.”

Asked how long she and her husband had known Mr Auchi, she replied: “I will not be able to answer this question.”

Mr Auchi’s lawyer, asked whether the Fintrade Services loan was used to buy the land which became Mr Obama’s garden, stated: “No, not as far as my client is aware.”

Although the Carter-Ruck letter did not touch on the issue, Auchi is also alleged to have involvement with several questionable business deals in the new Iraq. A 146 page report to the Pentagon Inspector General posted on Wikileaks is described by Washington Times investigative journalist Bill Gertz who writes:

A 2004 Pentagon report obtained by The Washington Times identified Auchi as a global arms dealer and Iraqi billionaire “who, behind the facade of legitimate business, served as Saddam Hussein’s principle international financial manipulator and bag man.”

The report to the Pentagon inspector general stated that “significant

Human Events reports that Auchi’s General Mediterranean Holdings financed a 250 megawatt power plant in the Kurdish town of Chamchamal, Iraq along with Rezko and Iraq’s former Minister of Electricity (and Chicago resident), Aiham Alsammarae.

Returning in 2003 to post-Saddam Iraq, Alsammarae had been made Minister of Electricity under the occupation government of Paul Bremer. Alsammarae escaped “the Chicago way” from the Green Zone in December, 2006 after being held for four months in relation to a $2 billion Iraqi reconstruction corruption case. He returned to his Chicago mansion.

Writing March 3, 2008 in Human Events’ John Batchelor reports on the Alsammarae-Obama-Rezko connection:

“…in April 2005, one month before Mr. Alsammarae left his post, his Ministry of Electricity signed a contract for $50 million with Companion Security to provide training to Iraqis to guard electrical plants by flying them to Illinois for classes.

“Companion Security was headed by a former Chicago policeman with a troubled history, Daniel T. Frawley, in partnership with Mr. Rezko and in association with Daniel Mahru, the lawyer for the original contract and Mr. Rezko’s former business partner. In April 2006, Mr. Frawley entered negotiations with Governor Rod Blagojevich’s staff to lease a military facility in Illinois to be a training camp. In August 2006, Mr. Frawley started negotiations with Mr. Obama’s U.S. Senate staff to complete the contract….

“The timeline of Companion discussions in 2006 is important to note: April 2006 Frawley speaks to governor’s office; August 2006 Frawley speaks to senator’s office; October 2006 indictment of Rezko revealed; October 2006 Rezko arrested upon return from Syria; October 2006 Alsammarae convicted in Baghdad and makes his first escape attempt; December 2006 Alsammarae escapes from Baghdad. …

“(In 2004) Mr. Auchi traveled by private aircraft to Midway Airport in Chicago and then to a fete at the Four Season Hotel, where he met with his business partner in Chicago real estate, Mr. Rezko, as well as with Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Also present that night, according to a fresh report by James Bone and Dominic Kennedy of the London Times, was State Senator Barack Obama, who had recently won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat….”

Jay Stewart of the Better Government Assn. in Chicago told the LA Times: “Everybody in this town knew that Tony Rezko was headed for trouble. When he got indicted, there wasn’t a single insider who was surprised. It was viewed as a long time coming. . . .Why would you be having anything to do with Tony Rezko, particularly if you’re planning to run for president?”

How much could a US President be influenced by his dealings with Rezko and his associates?

Ex-congressman’s brother tasted political victory behind the scenes
by Gordon Russell, The Times-Picayune
Saturday May 30, 2009, 10:56 PM

At first glance, Mose Jefferson embodies an archetype of American politics: the man who makes a living, and a life, by attaching himself like a parasite to a famous and powerful relative fortunate enough to win office. The truth is more complicated. While his once-formidable stroke was derived from the political success of his younger brother, former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, the reverse was true as well.

For it was Mose Jefferson, 66, who cut his teeth on politics first, learning the tricks of the trade as a Democratic Party field lieutenant in one of Chicago’s most storied — some would say notorious — political operations before returning to steer his brother’s campaigns in New Orleans.

He learned the craft well. Detractors and admirers alike agree that from the xearly 1980s until Hurricane Katrina, Mose Jefferson was one of the city’s premier political tacticians. The organization he ran, the Progressive Democrats, with William Jefferson as its standard-bearer, grew into one of the city’s most potent forces.

Alinsky NTIC to pay $550K to settle Fed claim
Chicago business powered by Crains ^ | 6-3-09 | Lorena Yue

Posted on Wednesday, June 03, 2009

The National Training and Information Center was accused by the U.S. attorney’s office in a 2006 federal lawsuit of violating the federal False Claims Act when it used some of the millions it received from a division of the U.S. Department of Justice to lobby members of Congress with hopes of securing more grants. Federal law prohibits the use of federal funds to curry favor with congressmen or congressional employees in connection with a grant.

NTIC, 810 N. Milwaukee Ave., did not admit liability as part of the settlement, which was reached on May 29 and announced Wednesday by the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago.

“We didn’t think we violated (federal) regulation,” said Tom Geoghegan, NTIC’s lawyer. “We just determined it was better to resolve the matter now and move on.”

The group, founded by the late legendary grass-roots activist Gale Cincotta, was instrumental in the creation of the Community Reinvestment Act (1977), which required banks to lend in disadvantaged neighborhoods. It still lobbies on behalf of those areas, but also promotes and supports the creation of grass-roots organizations throughout the country.

NTIC was given more than $3 million between 2000 and 2002 in federal grants that were to be used in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice’s community justice empowerment program. That program was to help community-based groups revitalize and redevelop neighborhoods by combating crime, violence and drug use.

The U.S. attorney’s office claimed in its civil lawsuit that NTIC spent $207,131 of that federal grant money for staff and others to attend mandatory training conferences in Washington, D.C. A March 2008 report from the Office of Inspector General on NTIC’s activities during those meetings claims that the group attempted to conceal that it was holding lobbying-related sessions instead of general training.

“Although the activities on the official agendas for these conferences appeared legitimate and reimbursable under the terms of the grant, our review of internal documentation, such as preliminary agendas, planning notes and post-event evaluations, revealed that these events focused on planning and conducting prohibited lobbying activities and that NTIC officials attempted to hide this from” the U.S. Department of Justice, the report said.

Mayor Richard Daley said Tuesday that he did not know until last week that a former alderman had repaid the city $91,000 he had obtained as a ghost payroller on three City Council committees, including the Finance Committee led by Ald. Edward Burke (14th).

Daley said City Corporation Counsel Susan Sher did not notify him of the reimbursements from former Ald. Joseph Martinez (31st), even though they were accompanied by letters addressed to Daley

Sher has said that she was so alarmed by the payments that she immediately contacted federal authorities.

“Last week, Susan Sher came in and mentioned it to me when I got back from Washington,” Daley said.

Sher could not be reached for comment.

Chicago Tribune - Tuesday, February 11, 1997

Having informed Mayor Richard Daley that she will soon be leaving his administration, City Corporation Counsel Susan Sher said Monday that she will miss what she called the toughest job she has ever held.

As an 8-year veteran of the city’s legal department and its top lawyer since 1993, Sher, 48, oversees a staff of 160

But on May 1, Sher said she will begin a new job as vice president and general counsel at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she will supervise a legal staff of four.

“Most jobs are slower-paced than City Hall,” said Sher, whose bid to become a federal judge in 1995 was backed by Daley, but failed to attract the backing of U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun.

While not ruling out another bid for the federal bench at some point, Sher said she took the post at the hospital because, “I think the hospital is a wonderful institution. It’s a great opportunity.”

It doesn’t hurt that the job also comes with tuition breaks for her two sons, ages 11 and 15, to attend the University of Chicago Lab School.

Sher is paid $112,000 a year as corporation counsel and declined to comment on her new pay, except to say it represents a “substantial pay increase.”

Sher maintains that it is “pure happenstance” that her decision to leave City Hall coincides with the current federal ghost payrolling investigation and the controversy involving Ald. Edward Burke (14th), chairman of the City Council Finance Committee.

Barack’s rock - Obama ‘s blunt, tough partner Michelle helps shape her husband’s politics and life and is integral to his campaign
Chicago Tribune (IL) - Sunday, April 22, 2007
Author: Christi Parsons, Bruce Japsen and Bob Secter, Tribune staff reporters

At City Hall, Michelle Obama forged close and lasting friendships with Jarrett and many other top Daley aides, including former Corporation Counsel Susan Sher and David Mosena, who was the mayor’s chief of staff when Michelle Obama first joined his administration. She left in 1993.

All have long since left the city payroll as well, but are loyal to the mayor and now the Obamas. Their careers also have frequently overlapped, and together they make up a network that reaches into virtually every aspect of Chicago politics.

After leaving City Hall, Jarrett went on to lead the Chicago Transit Authority. She recruited Michelle Obama to the transit agency’s citizen advisory committee. Mosena, who now is president of the Museum of Science and Industry, served with Obama on the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.

Currently, she works as the $273,618-a-year vice president for community and external affairs at The University of Chicago Medical Center. Her boss there is Sher.

City Hall records show Michelle Obama , then still named Robinson, began work as a $60,000-a-year mayoral assistant in September of 1991. She didn’t stay long in the mayor’s office. Within weeks, Daley promoted Jarrett to run the new Department of Planning and Development. Obama followed.

Susan Sher, associate counsel to the president and counsel to the first lady, previously brought home $718,477 from the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was general counsel and vice president for legal and governmental affairs.

“Like many Arab Americans, Rezko had close ties to the Nation of Islam, which sympathized with the Palestinian and Arab causes. He became close to the inspiring icons like Muhammad Ali and even young Obama, a little-known state legislator who later rose to stardom.”

Rezko is representative of a recent trend in Chicago politics: the rise of Arab wheeler-dealers as corruption catalysts.

The elites of the African-American and Arab communities may tend to agree on foreign policy. But down on the street, relations are hostile. The Arab immigrants, who are best known in Chicago as middle-man merchants operating liquor stores and the like in the ghetto, much like the Koreans in South Central Los Angeles at the time of the 1992 riots, are too hated by black voters to win political power for themselves through the ballot box. Hence their leaders tend to play shadowy roles in Chicago politics.

Rezko kept a sharp eye out for upcoming black political talent who could provide a politically correct front for him. Rezmar offered Obama a job in 1990. He didn’t take it, but that was the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial friendship between Rezko and the man who is now the Democratic Presidential nominee. Rezko paid for 15 percent of Obama’s first campaign, and Obama looked out in the state senate for Rezko’s interests in low-income housing and in packing the state’s hospital construction board.

Contract set-asides for minorities provide a lucrative opening for crooks like Rezko. The demand for “diversity” provides an excuse for a thumb on the scales, a justification for diverting the contract from the lowest bidder to a political ally who employs a minority frontman. Most of America’s pundit class hasn’t figured this out yet, but Rezko grasped how “diversity” works soon after getting off the plane. (Indeed, multicultural America is becoming ever more like the Ottoman Empire, giving an advantage to immigrants from old Ottoman mercantile minorities.)

Chicago explained: “Rezko ran Jabir Muhammad’s firm, Crucial Concessions. Under Mayor Washington [remember that fundraiser?], Crucial won the concessions to sell food at city beaches.”

Now I know why Chicago beach concession food in the 1980s was so untasty. The municipal hot dog stands were managed by the Nation of Islam and Tony Rezko!

Muhammad and Rezko worked the same minority set-aside scam with several high-grossing Panda Expresses at O’Hare airport. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on March 17, 2005:

“Two restaurants at O’Hare Airport have been allowed to rake in millions of dollars, even though the Daley administration learned back in 2002 that the company running them was probably a phony minority “front” for Panda Express and Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a top fund-raiser for Gov. Blagojevich. Crucial Inc. won the O’Hare concessions in part because it was certified as a minority-owned business. Its largest shareholder was listed as Jabir Herbert Muhammad, son of the late Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Muhammad. … The [Chicago minority contractor] program has been tarred by a relentless string of scandals…”[City ignored possible O’Hare ‘front’ for years, By Chris Fusco, Fran Spielman And Michael Sneed]

Jabir and Tony also got a $10 million affirmative action contract from SBC, the giant phone company whose president was William Daley, Mayor Richie Daley’s brother, to run the payphones at the Cook County jail. Their designated owner-operator was a twofer under the quota of 35 percent of contracts reserved for minority and women-owned businesses: a black woman named Deloris Wade, although she happened to be dead.

Building on these black Chicago roots, Rezko eventually became the statewide power behind the throne when the Democrats swept to victory in the 2002 elections. Chicago Magazine reported:

“Rezko became a virtual one-man headhunting firm for staffing the Blagojevich administration, sending along recommended candidates, many of whom ended up getting appointments. … (The U.S. attorney here has charged that Rezko schemed to pack the government with his cronies so that they could peddle their influence.)”

Diversity sensitivity also provides a convenient justification for corruption:

Timothy Drew is not a subject of black history month. He has not been the subject of a PBS documentary nor a critical biography. Most history professors, even at prestigious black universities, know little about him. But few African American leaders have cast a larger shadow. Without Drew, there would be no black leaders such as Elijah Mohammed, Malcolm X, Mukasa Dada, Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, or Louis Farrakhan; no organizations such as the Black Power Movement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Death Angels, or the New Black Panthers; no rap and hip-hop artists such as Public Enemy, Ice Cube, KRS-One, X-Clan, or Lauryn Hill; and no Barack Hussein Obama.

By 1913, Timothy Drew, now known as Noble Drew Ali, managed to convince hundreds of Newark Negroes that they were not the descendants of African slaves, but the sons and daughters of Berber Moors, the very Moors who had introduced slavery to the Ivory Coast. In 1913, he opened what is reportedly the first mosque in America - - the Holy Moabite Temple of the Science of the World, also known as the Canaanite Temple. “The Moors were living up and down the Mississippi River before the European man came to them,‚” Drew told his flock. “The bananas were large and the grapes were four-in-hand. It took two men with hand sticks to carry a bunch of grapes.‚”1

Political consultant John Ruff dies in auto accident (Key Figure in Burris Perjury Trial)
Chicago Sun Times ^ | June 9, 2009 | DAVE McKINNEY

SPRINGFIELD — A key figure in the perjury investigation of U.S. Sen. Roland Burris died in an automobile accident Monday, authorities in far west-suburban Kendall County confirmed Tuesday.

John Ruff, of Sandwich, Ill., was killed shortly before 3 p.m. when his 2001 BMW convertible crossed an oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a tree while he was driving eastbound on Rogers Road near Oak Brook Road in unincorporated Plano, said Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Pearson.

John Ruff, a key figure in the perjury investigation of U.S. Sen. Roland Burris was killed in an automobile accident Monday in Kendall County. He was 42-years-old. (Jean Lachat/Sun-Times)

Police have ruled out alcohol as a cause of the crash, but toxicology results won’t be known until a coroner’s inquest in mid July.

Pearson said there were no witnesses to the crash nor was there evidence of any other vehicles involved. There were no skid marks on the road.

“We have absolutely no idea what caused Mr. Ruff’s vehicle to veer off the roadway,” Pearson said.

Deputy Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Marcellis told the Sun-Times that Ruff died of blunt head and chest trauma. No autopsy is planned.

Marcellis said that a friend of Ruff’s indicated to her that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor, though it was unclear whether that had any bearing on the crash.

“Obviously, one of the effects of a brain tumor is you have seizures. It could have been an issue for him,” she said.

Ruff, 42, was the subject of a March 6 front-page story in the Sun-Times in which he issued an apology for being a co-plaintiff with Burris in a lawsuit seeking to force Secretary of State Jesse White to certify Burris’ controversial late-December appointment by impeached ex-Gov. Blagojevich.

Ruff, a health-care and political consultant, raised the prospect of a possible quid pro quo between Blagojevich and Burris, recounting a telephone conversation with Burris’ business partner Fred Lebed, who allegedly told Ruff on the date of Burris’ appointment, “We’ll have to do some things for the governor.”

Ruff also said he recalled Lebed telling him he’d had discussions about Burris’ interest in the Senate appointment with Blagojevich representatives — lobbyist John Wyma, now-indicted chief of staff John Harris and former chief of staff Lon Monk — as early as October.

STOLEN: It’s the Chicago way......Trying to keep all the dots together in one place...SO folks can connect them at their leisure....anything else you want to add to the site would be appreciated.

Veeery nice place to have an ‘accident’. The middle of freaking NOWHERE! Its no wonder there were no witnesses. I looked this location up in Google Maps and its alllll farmland & woods. But the article is slightly wrong, the location is in Newark, IL 60541, not unincorporated Plano. But it IS ‘near’ the Plano School Dist 88.
But the *odd* things about this are:

He was going eastbound on Rogers Rd - away from his house in Sandwich, IL.

Going East on Rogers @ Oakbrook Rd is approaching a Main Cross Intersection, Whitfield Rd.

He should have been slowing down or getting ready to, depending how close he was to Oakbrook Rd. As Whitfield is the ‘main road’ and he’d have to stop. Rogers Rd dead ends shortly after Whitfield Rd.

If he was going the speed limit, hitting a Tree Head on should NOT have killed him, especially in a BMW. Seat belt or not.
Another ‘funny thing’ is in the ‘good old days’ The Chicago Outfit would (cough) ‘get rid of’ people in this type of area. One couple who crossed the Mob were chased down in their car and shotgunned to death right in this area, again, no witnesses. And the Spilotro bros (Tony & Michael) were found in a Farm Field straight east of here in Indiana, as replayed in the movie Casino(1).

Now I’m not saying this was a Hit but this thing smells of dead fish.

(1) Except in real life they were killed in a Chi suburb (Elmhurst) house basement. And the Mobsters who botched the burial were also whacked. (sigh.... I love the old Mob, they had scruples)

Obama Learned Power Politics From The Daleys
American Thinker ^ | June 13, 2009 | Lee Cary

Posted on Saturday, June 13, 2009 11:25:55 AM by Reagan Man

Old guard Beltway politicos marvel at Obama’s skill at concentrating power. He learned it from the Daley’s.

Chicago is nicknamed “the City that works.” The Office of the Mayor, where power has been centralized, sees to it that it “works.”

“More recently, decentralization has been mitigated by the informal concentration of power and influence in the person of the mayor. This is commonly recognized as the Chicago political machine, founded by Mayor Anton J. Cermak (1931–1933), developed by Mayor Edward J. Kelly (1933–1947), and perfected by Mayor Richard J. Daley (1955–1976).

Daley’s control of Democratic Party ward organizations permitted him to dominate the city council and thereby expand his authority. In 1956, state legislation removed the responsibility for initiating the city budget from the council and placed it in the mayor’s office. This allowed the mayor, rather than council politicians, to establish the city’s financial priorities. Daley also began to whittle away at independent sources of aldermanic authority, by, for example, taking over the “driveway permit” power (each minor construction permit required an individual bill passed by council) and professionalizing and centralizing ward services under his office. New state legislation also increased the mayor’s authority over departments and the various urban renewal agencies dealing with city planning and construction.

Later mayors, however, were less able to usurp the official power residing in the city council. Jane M. Byrne (1979–1983) was elected as a reformer but quickly recognized the need to ally with regular party leaders in the council. In Harold Washington’s [first African-American mayor of Chicago] first three years of office, city council opponents marshaled a majority of votes to stymie his policy objectives and usher in the paralyzing “Council Wars” Only his veto power kept the council from completely ignoring his agenda until his supporters won a majority in special council elections in 1986. Mayor Richard M. Daley (1989–) has continued a functional aspect of his father’s machine politics, using his campaign organization and network of fundraisers to offer advantages to selected aldermanic candidates.” (Source)

The Chicago City Council is the Mayor’s rubber stamp – a brokerage house for distributing patronage and favoritism that masquerades as bad legislative theater. The Mayor runs the whole show.

Similarly, up until now the U.S. Democrat-dominated Congress has been subservient to the President. We’ll watch the Health Care decision to see if that relationship continues. Obama’s reliance on “czars” accountable only to him is akin to the functioning of the City of Chicago Departments.

Now that he’s inside the Beltway, instead of dealing with lethargic career bureaucrats ensconced in the assortment of Cabinet Department silos – like herding cats – Obama is establishing his own parallel bureaucracy answerable only to him. Hence the platoon of czars. Daily, many Cabinet positions are becoming merely ceremonial.

So where did he learn about the inner workings of the Mayor’s Office?

Barack Obama was a law student at Harvard in 1990 when Rezko’s low-income housing development company offered him a job. He declined. Two years later he returned to Chicago to work on a voter registration drive while he figured out what to do next.

Next came in 1993 when he joined a law firm that represented subsidized housing developers eager to tap into government funds available to reconstruct public housing. Mayor Richard M. Daley planned to tear down Chicago’s old, dilapidated public housing stock and build new units. It promised government housing renovation on a massive scale.

At Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, Allison Davis was Obama’s boss and tutor in the legalities of government subsidized housing. (Source)

Obama learned much from Allison Davis.

He also learned from Michelle Obama. She once worked in the Office of the Mayor. Her boss was Valerie Jarrett, today a senior advisor in the White House, and the one who was favored by Obama to follow in his senatorial footsteps, until Blago went off the reservation.

So it helps to understand the functioning of the Office of the President today if we view it through the Office of the Mayor of Chicago. Similarities abound.

Chicago) Mayor Daley Nephew Linked to Warehouse Lease

A published report says a company co-owned by Mayor Richard Daley’s nephew used Chicago pension funds to buy a warehouse that was later leased by the city for nearly $500,000.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports in its Sunday editions that Robert Vanecko’s company, DV Urban Realty Partners, invested $4.2 million of pension funds in a southwest side warehouse in November 2007. The newspaper says that ever since, the city has leased the facility to store dump trucks.

Another FOB (”Friend of Barack”) is on the Spot
The Chicago Daily Observer ^ | June 17, 2009 | Daniel J. Kelley

Posted on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 9:48:40 AM by PBRCat

Another “Friend of Barack” is under increased scrutiny these days, but only a mere handful of media reports have linked Obama with Allison Davis. Once upon a time, Davis, Obama and Rezko were as thick as thieves. Davis and Rezko relied upon their friend and politically ally, Barack, to promote their plans to redevelop dilapidated slums into affordable housing for low income residents of the former legislative district represented by State Senator Obama. Tax dollars were misspent and pocketed by the developers, while the minority tenants continued to live in substandard apartments. Obama managed to bob and weave throughout the primaries as he ducked the malfeasance allegations and the issue was ignored in the general election. For his part, Davis dismissed the numerous building code violations by blaming the impoverished tenants for their own misfortunes.

More recently, Mayor Richard M. Daley has been placed on the defensive by the simmering city pension fund scandal. While the members of the complicit media focus their short attention spans on the mayor’s nephew, Robert Vanecko, less has been said about Vanecko’s wily business partner, Allison Davis. This is an angle that needs to be more examined closely.

BUT also here on how the machine works:,32335

If nothing else exposing Davis would serve a higher purpose: publicizing the blatant hypocrisy of the phony activists who are really reliable cogs in the Democratic Machine. A one time civil rights protester, who marched outside of City Hall, Davis proved to be someone who could be bought off by the system. His one time protégé, Obama means to overhaul the American economy and engage in a massive expansion of the size and scope of government activities. Like Davis, Obama, exempts himself from the rules and intends to live a life of ease and plenty. The president can jet off for a dinner date on Broadway without worrying about the hypocrisy of simultaneously asking all of us commoners to pay higher taxes and make sacrifices while reducing our wasteful use of energy and limiting our pollution causing habits.

Posing as a community activist is a tried and true way to advance your political and financial career in Democratic Chicago: the Shaw brothers, Bob and his late brother, Bill, were supposedly fair housing activists; Dorothy Tillman attended Chicago Board of Education meetings where she shouted down Angeline Caruso, a former acting school superintendent, and ridiculed Caruso’s frumpy appearance in the name of education activism; Luis Guiterez marched with Communists and Puerto Rican Nationalists, some of whom were later accused of committing acts of domestic terrorism; Marilyn Katz ran with the campus radicals, Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, and protested the Viet Nam war while hurling missiles at the police before she became a public relations expert for the political machine; Jan Schakowsky and her unapologetic, convicted criminal spouse, Robert Cremer, are two other fakers. Interestingly enough, despite their varied backgrounds, these folks have something in common: all of these individuals seemed to fall into line as soon as their personal needs and wants were gratified and they were given a place at the head table. They have all been feeding from the public trough ever since. The former Soviets called such privileged leaders “the vanguard of the proletariat.”

Convicted Oak Parker traveled in Obama, Daley circles
Wednesday Journal (Oak Park, Illinois) ^ | June 16, 2009 | Anonymous

Posted on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 11:35:10 PM by Piranha

William Moorehead, the Oak Park resident sent to prison in 2007 for stealing more than $1 million from various federally supported public housing concerns, apparently ran with a powerful inside crowd connected to both Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and a then-state senator named Barack Obama.

Published news reports show that Moorehead was once a “longtime business partner” and legal client of Allison Davis, who until recently was the business partner of Daley nephew Robert Vanecko. Davis is also often referred to as Obama’s mentor, a role he reportedly fulfilled as the future president’s first law firm boss.

At one time, William Moorehead & Associates managed 14 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-insured or -subsidized apartment complexes throughout the Chicago area totaling about 7,000 units. Moorehead’s fraud and mismanagement was uncovered in the course of an audit conducted by HUD’s inspector general in 2003 and 2004.

Moorehead, now 66, pleaded guilty in April 2006 to engaging in a scheme to defraud HUD of at least $995,000 between early 1994 and August 2002. In May 2007, he was sentenced to four years in the Marion medium-security facility. He’s scheduled to be released March 25, 2011.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that during the period Moorehead admitted he was stealing money, he loaned Davis $100,000. Davis has not been accused of any wrong doing.

One of the Davis-controlled HUD buildings that Moorehead’s firm managed, from 1999 until 2001, Grove Parc Plaza, was taken over by a firm headed by another person with strong Obama connections.

Valerie Jarrett, a member of Obama’s campaign finance committee and now a senior White House adviser, was the chief executive of Habitat Co. in 2001, when it took over management of Grove Parc Plaza from Moorehead’s company.

Obama was hired out of law school in 1993 by Davis’s law firm, Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland PC, and worked on voting rights and employment cases. According to press accounts, he reportedly wrote letters as a state senator, helping Davis and partner Tony Rezko get $14.6 million in state and federal funding for Cottage View Terrace, another Moorehead-managed property.

Moorehead, who also co-owned two housing developments near Cabrini Green with Davis, was supposed to manage another Davis co-owned HUD building, Cottage Grove Terrace, but was reportedly “dumped before it opened in 2002, in favor of Davis’s son, Cullen.”

The Obamacare Horror Story You Won’t Hear

The White House, Democrats and MoveOn liberals are spreading health care sob stories to sell a government takeover. But there’s one health care policy nightmare you won’t hear the Obamas hyping. It’s a tale of poor minority patient-dumping in Chicago — with first lady Michelle Obama’s fingerprints all over it.

Both Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois have raised red flags about the outsourcing program run by the University of Chicago Medical Center. The hospital has nonprofit status and receives lucrative tax breaks in exchange for providing charity care.

Yet, in fiscal year 2007, when Mrs. Obama was employed there, it spent a measly $10 million on charity care for the poor — 1.3 percent of its total hospital expenses, according to an analysis performed for The Washington Post by the nonpartisan Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. The figure is below the 2.1 percent average for nonprofit hospitals in surrounding Cook County.

Rep. Rush called for a House investigation last week in response to months of patient-dumping complaints, noting: “Congress has a duty to expend its power to mitigate and prevent this despicable practice from continuing in centers that receive federal funds.”

Don’t expect the president to support a probe. While a top executive at the hospital, Mrs. Obama helped engineer the plan to offload low-income patients with non-urgent health needs.

Michelle Obama’s Patient-Dumping Scheme

The First Lady helped create a notorious program that dumped poor patients on community hospitals, yet the national media ignore the story. Imagine if her husband were a Republican.

The University of Chicago Medical Center has received a good deal of justly opprobrious press over its policy of “redirecting” low-income patients to community hospitals while reserving its own beds for well-heeled patients requiring highly profitable procedures.

Substantial coverage was given to a recent indictment of the program by the American College of Emergency Physicians. ACEP’s president, Dr. Nick Jouriles, released a statement suggesting that the initiative comes “dangerously close to ‘patient dumping,’ a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act, and reflected an effort to ‘cherry pick’ wealthy patients over poor.”

Oddly absent from most of the unflattering press coverage of UCMC’s patient-dumping scheme is any mention of the role our new First Lady played in devising the program. A laudable exception has been the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported last August that “Michelle Obama — currently on unpaid leave from her $317,000-a-year job as a vice president of the prestigious hospital — helped create the program.”

On the rare occasions when other “news” media have bothered to connect the Urban Health Initiative to its glamorous creator, they have attempted to whitewash this tawdry program. Typical of such disingenuous coverage was a story in the Washington Post, which described it as “an innovative program to steer the patients to existing neighborhood clinics.”

But no amount of journalistic lipstick can hide the reality that Mrs. Obama’s initiative is a patient-dumping scheme. Such “cherry-picking,” as Dr. Jouriles accurately describes it, was, at one time, fairly common.

Prestigious institutions like the University of Chicago Medical Center routinely “dumped” Medicaid, uninsured and other unprofitable patients on less mercenary community hospitals.

Many patients suffered needlessly, and more than a few actually died, as the result of this practice. So, in 1986, President Reagan signed the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act (EMTALA) into law.

EMTALA made such “redirection” illegal, but many high profile hospitals still chafed at being forced to treat poor patients.

Enter Michelle Obama, UCMC’s “Vice President for Community and External Affairs.”

Mrs. Obama first hatched the UCMC program as the “South Side Health Collaborative,” which featured a gang of “counselors” whose job it was to “advise” low-income patients that they would be better off at other hospitals and clinics.

The program was so successful in getting rid of unwanted patients that she expanded it, gave it a new name, and hired none other than David Axelrod to sell the program to the public.

According to the Sun-Times, “Obama’s wife and Valerie Jarrett, an Obama friend and adviser who chairs the medical center’s board, backed the Axelrod firm’s hiring.” Axelrod helped the future First Lady formulate a public relations campaign in which the “Urban Health Initiative” was represented as a boon to the community actuated by the purest of altruistic motives.

The resultant PR campaign was a study in Orwellian audacity. Chicago’s inner city residents soon began hearing that UCMC’s patient dumping program would “dramatically improve health care for thousands of South Side residents” and that the medical center was generously willing to provide “a ride on a shuttle bus to other centers.”

Likewise, the people who ran the community hospitals to which these unwanted patients were being shuttled began to read claims in local media to the effect that the Urban Health Initiative was good for them as well.

Dr. Eric Whitaker, the Blagojevich crony who succeeded Mrs. Obama as Director of the program, repeatedly assured gullible reporters that the financial impact on these hospitals would be positive: “The initiative actually is improving their bottom lines.” The CFOs of those hospitals were no doubt relieved to learn that treating Medicaid and uninsured patients is profitable.

But you just can’t please some people. In one of the few frank passages of the Post article, we discover that many members of UCMC’s medical staff believe the program is nothing more than an “attempt to ensure that the hospital retains only affluent patients with insurance.”

And another association of emergency physicians has joined ACEP in denouncing the Urban Health Initiative. The Chicago Tribune reports that Dr. Larry Weiss, president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine is unhappy about UCMC’s failure to consult its own ER physicians before initiating the program: “Not including emergency-room physicians ... would be analogous to changing the way surgery is performed in an operating room without involving any surgeons.” Dr. Whitaker assures us, however, that such critics are merely “opposed to change.”

Presumably, he would be similarly dismissive of Angela Adams, who brought her son to the medical center’s ER after his lip had been partially torn off by a pit bull.

As the Tribune puts it, “Instead of rushing Dontae into surgery ... the hospital’s staff began pressing her about insurance.” Unfortunately for Dontae, he was covered by Medicaid. So, all he got from the UCMC emergency department was a shot, some antibiotics, and instructions to “follow up with Cook County.”

Angela had to take her son across town to John Stroger Hospital, where he was immediately admitted for reconstructive surgery. Like doctors Jouriles and Weiss, Angela is having trouble seeing the community benefit of the Urban Health Initiative.

Meanwhile, the program’s parents, Michelle Obama and David Axelrod, have moved to Washington. As the First Lady and the President’s closest advisor, they wield enormous power.

Indeed, they may be the most powerful people in the Obama Administration, aside from the President himself. If these two characters were willing to betray their Chicago neighbors — the South Side’s most vulnerable citizens — with a disgraceful program like the Urban Health Initiative, what sort of mischief will they devise for the hapless denizens of flyover country?

Come to think of it, isn’t Obamacare being sold to us in pretty much the same way the Urban Health Initiative was sold to Chicago?

American Hero - Anita Moncrief, Whistleblower - former ACORN operative is sued!

FROM: (more at link)

Anita made the following statements (basis or basis set forth in parenthesis at end):

1. Project Vote has violated its 501(c)(3) status by using government and private grants that ultimately go directly or indirectly to ACORN (based on direct knowledge).

2. ACORN, Project Vote and Citizens Services Inc. (CSI) are essentially the same organization with different tax designations that are used to facilitate the transfer of money between them (based on direct and indirect knowledge).

3. ACORN has promoted a culture of dishonesty motivated by reaching target Voter Registration goals and senior staff have portrayed an attitude that allows for some “bad” cards in order to reach these goals (based on direct and indirect knowledge).

4. Karyn Gillette, Project Vote Development Director, Jeff Robinson, senior Project Vote “money man” and Nathan Henderson James, Project Vote Research and Political Director are all employed by CSI and may have worked directly with anyone seeking the services of CSI and money paid to CSI would have obvious ACORN ties (based on direct and indirect knowledge and documents).

5. Zach Polett, former Executive Director of Project Vote and former director of ACORN Political Operations mentioned that Obama had worked for us and that he even supervised him during a ACORN Political staff retreat in November 2007 (based on direct knowledge).

Obama in the last presidential debate: “My only involvement I’ve had with ACORN was I represented them alongside the U.S. Justice Department in making Illinois implement a motor voter law that helped people get registered at DMVs.”

That’s a lie, not a fact.

Yes, Obama represented ACORN in that lawsuit and the Clinton Justice Department predictably sided with ACORN.

But that was NOT Obama’s only involvement with ACORN.

And Obama looked into the camera during the last presidential debate and flat out lied to the American people about it (in his calm, seemingly non-threatening manner).

ACORN is the organization with which Obama has been associated throughout his adult life, as organizer, trainer, lawyer, funder and political beneficiary...and Obama’s Achilles heel.

Anita reports revealing connections between ACORN and the Obama campaign based on personal knowledge.

In late 2007, Anita reports, Anita received a call from the Obama campaign asking if this was the same Project Vote that Obama worked for in the 90’s. With the staff retreat fresh in mind, Anita answered yes and sent an email to Zach Polett, Karyn Gillette, Nathan Henderson James, and Kevin Whelan stating that the campaign wanted someone to call them back regarding some media questions that were being asked at the time.

In late 2007, Anita reports, Karyn Gillette approached Anita to tell her that she had direct contact with the Obama campaign and had obtained their donor lists. This meeting took place sometime in November of 2007 and may have even been a conference call between the campaign and Project Vote. Anita was given an excel spreadsheet to work with for cultivation of new donors. When Anita had trouble because of the duplicates, Karyn stated that she would contact her person at the campaign and see if they had another one.

Anita reports that Karyn Gillette also provided lists obtained from the Kerry and Clinton campaigns, as well as the 2004 DNC donor lists, and that these lists were shared with the Political directors of roughly 12 ACORN battleground states in order to raise money for a $28 million dollar (number as of 11/2007) voter registration drive (based on direct and indirect knowledge and documents).

Anita reports that research uncovered after the Rathke embezzlement scandal showed that persons demanded a forensic audit and suggested a well-known, credible firm to do it, but Bertha Lewis told them that the auditors came back with a contract that was “too expensive” and that’s what Dale Rathke told funders back when they were hoping Arthur Anderson would take over auditing (based on indirect knowledge and documents).

Anita reports that ACORN and Project Vote used CCI to transfer money between the organizations and may be guilty of violating RICO statues (based on indirect knowledge and documents).

Anita reports that Sidley Austin, Obama’s old law firm, is representing ACORN pro-bono and Mesirow Financial, the firm hired to provide financial advice to ACORN, is headed by a major Obama donor, Richard Mesirow (based on indirect knowledge and documents).

Anita also notes that questions have been raised about the shredding or destruction of documents by ACORN’s own lawyers (based on documents).

Bottom line: ACORN has been improperly coordinating with and operating as an arm of the Obama campaign, and “the Senator from ACORN”’s involvement with ACORN has been much more than his lawful representation of ACORN in the motor voter case years ago.

GOt it...Wonder if AMericor funds were funneled at Clout U too....Who is really getting the money?

How about Clout U.?
June 21, 2009

University of Illinois President B. Joseph White thinks it’s a cheap shot for us to call his school “Rezko U.” Federal prosecutors apparently don’t.

U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald wants to see records of communication between campus officials and ex- Gov. Rod Blagojevich or his cronies — Antoin “Tony” Rezko, William Cellini, Chris Kelly and Alonzo “Lon” Monk — related to applications for admission to the university.

Rezko is in prison for taking kickbacks in exchange for state contracts;

The subpoena follows a Tribune report that one of Rezko’s relatives got into the U. of I. after Blagojevich asked White to intervene. Never mind that the applicant’s ACT score was “pretty low,” to quote the admissions official who got big-footed on the deal.

After much sober reflection, though, we’re beginning to wonder if the name “Rezko U.” really is unfair — to Rezko. Why single him out? The Tribune investigation found that more than 100 current and former lawmakers used their political muscle to give applicants an edge.,0,4153194.story

Obama Camp Has Many Ties to Wife’s Employer

In December 2006, the medical center hired a public relations firm, ASK Public Strategies, to help sell the Urban Health Initiative. ASK is co-owned by Axelrod, Obama’s chief campaign strategist.

ASK was selected on the recommendation of Michelle Obama, Sher and Jarrett, according to Sullivan, the hospital spokeswoman. “Axelrod has a love affair with UC, and is arguably the best in the country at public affairs,” Sullivan said in an e-mail.

ASK started work in January 2007; the next month, Barack Obama launched his campaign.

. Axelrod’s partner, Eric Sedler, confirmed his firm did the work but declined to discuss specifics. Hospital executives declined to say how much Axelrod’s firm was paid.

Howard Peters of the nonprofit Illinois Hospital Association praised the medical center’s efforts,

Millions for Axelrod in sale of firm

As he prepared to take a job in the White House at the end of last year, David Axelrod sold the political consulting firm that helped elect President Obama for $2 million to a group of consultants who helped steer Obama’s campaign.

According to a disclosure form released Friday evening by the White House, the firm, AKP&D Message & Media, paid him $897,000 last year, when it had basically turned itself into an arm of the Obama campaign, which paid the company $2.5 million.

The disclosure indicates that Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe—the “P” in AKP&D and still an influential political consultant for Obama and the Democratic National Committee—was not among the buyers, though he’ll remain a senior advisor to the firm.

Instead, Axelrod reported the new owner is a “newly formed S-Corporation” owned by Obama campaign vets John Kupper, John Del Cecato and Larry Grisolano.

Kupper and Del Cecato — the “K” and “D,” respectively — handled research and for the campaign and also wrote many of its ads. Grislano is a Los Angeles-based strategist who handled direct mail for Obama’s campaign.

Axelrod’s disclosure offers a peak inside the business model he used to create a Chicago-based consulting powerhouse, which included both AKP&D and ASK Public Strategies.

ASK, which specialized in corporate public relations, paid him partnership income of $152,000 last year, according to the disclosure, even though he had taken a leave of absence to work on the campaign. Axelrod sold his share of ASK for $1 million at the end of last year to Kupper and Eric Sedler.

Fact Sheet About Public Allies and the Obamas
Fact Sheet on Public Allies’ History with Senator Barack and Michelle Obama

Public Allies has received many media inquiries about our history with President-elect and Michelle Obama, and has been featured in many news stories about them. Following are some details and anecdotes about the Obamas’ history with Public Allies.

· President-elect Obama was a member of the founding advisory board of Public Allies. Michelle was the founding Executive Director of Public Allies Chicago from Spring, 1993 until Fall, 1996, and served on our national board of directors from 1997 until 2001. President-elect Obama was no longer on the board of Public Allies when Michelle was hired. Before joining Public Allies, she was an attorney at the law firm of Sidley & Austin and Deputy Director of Community Development for the City of Chicago.

· Under Michelle’s leadership, Public Allies Chicago pioneered many elements of Public Allies’ program model. To identify and develop the next generation of Chicago leaders, she recruited young people from housing projects and youth centers as well colleges and universities. Her emphasis on indigenous leadership and belief that all people have potential to lead became a core value of our leadership philosophy. When she left, Public Allies Chicago had a cash reserve, a committed board, a talented young staff, and a network of diverse, talented young leaders in Chicago who continue to serve the community today. Michelle was also a pioneer in the social entrepreneur movement – leaders who create new approaches and organizations to provide new solutions to social problems.

· At her subsequent jobs at the University of Chicago and University of Chicago Medical Center, Michelle hired more than a dozen Public Allies to work with her. In addition, she has continued to advise, coach, donate to, and champion Public Allies. President-elect Obama has also been an active volunteer and supporter. President-elect Obama has trained several classes of Allies in community organizing, spoken at Public Allies Chicago events, and helped Senator Durbin secure an appropriation from the Department of Justice that successfully helped us better recruit and retain young men of color for our Chicago program and learn practices we are applying nationally.

· Michelle Obama and Public Allies CEO Paul Schmitz were also original faculty members of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute at Northwestern University, led by John McKnight and Jody Kretzmann. John McKnight worked with Barack Obama as an organizer and wrote his Harvard Law School recommendation (see Audacity of Hope, page 360). The Institute has a strategic alliance with Public Allies’ consulting group, The Leadership Practice, through which we provide training and consulting services on how to better identify and mobilize local community assets and participation to strengthen communities.

· Quote from Paul Schmitz, CEO of Public Allies, who worked with Michelle:

“Michelle was an amazing leader and role model for all of us. As a very young staff in the early years, we all emulated Michelle’s incredible combination of professionalism, compassion, critical thinking and commitment to her community. For all of her immense talents, she was also one of the most down-to-earth, inclusive, and authentic leaders I’ve ever worked with. She really did believe that everyone could contribute to their communities and that leaders come from all backgrounds and all parts of the community. The Chicago program she pioneered really created the template we all work from today. We are proud of our colleague and wish her well.”

· Public Allies is a non-partisan organization and does not endorse candidates for elected office. Public Allies has enjoyed support from leaders of both political parties. In 1992, President George H.W. Bush identified Public Allies as a model for national service and funded our pilot program. Under President Clinton, we grew from a pilot to a national program, and under President George W. Bush, we more than doubled in size and were contracted to provide training and technical assistance to other grantees of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

past clients appeared in the press over the last year, including AT&T, Cablevision and the University of Chicago Medical Center. A fuller picture emerges from a review of public records, including an archived version of his Web site that contains an early list of companies and organizations his firm has worked with.

Among them were Household International, a subprime mortgage lender based in Illinois that faced accusations of predatory practices; Wisconsin Energy, which sought to counter opposition to its coal-fired power plants; and the Compete Coalition, a lobbying group in Washington that advocates deregulation of electricity markets.

Mr. Axelrod’s consulting business is divided between two companies. One, AKP&D Message and Media, focuses on political campaigns and is where Mr. Axelrod devotes most of his time. He is on leave from the other firm, ASK Public Strategies, which consults for companies and nonprofits, and is run primarily by his partner, Eric Sedler.

Beyond the different clientele, the two firms also have a different approach to transparency. While AKP&D identifies about 70 of its political clients on its Web site, ASK has a policy of nondisclosure.

On at least two occasions, ASK has been involved in public-opinion campaigns that used front groups largely bankrolled by a single corporation. One such effort was the New York Association for Better Choices, created to help Cablevision, the owner of Madison Square Garden, defeat a proposal for a stadium on Manhattan’s West Side. Cablevision paid ASK more than $1 million in 2004 and 2005, according to state lobbying records.

In Illinois, ASK created advertisements for Consumers Organized for Reliable Electricity — a group created by ComEd, a utility company that is a subsidiary of Exelon — that warned of possible blackouts if the state did not approve a rate increase. Exelon, a major contributor to Mr. Obama’s campaigns, also tapped ASK to help work on message strategy with the Compete Coalition, a lobbying organization made up of major electricity producers and consumers. A coalition membership list from earlier this year included ASK, although Mr. Sedler disputed that, adding that ASK’s dealings with the coalition were through Exelon and that it did not have a separate contract with the coalition.

Ever run across the name Eric WHitaker before?

I did not have any formal discussions with Tony,” Obama said, “beyond one individual, and that was Dr. Eric Whitaker, who ultimately became the head of the Illinois Department of Public Health and who had been a longtime friend of mine, who I had known since he was getting his master’s at Harvard and I was at the law school there.”

“He had expressed an interest in that post,” Obama informed the Tribune.

“I think he had applied separately,” Obama said, “but I don’t recall whether I called Tony or he called me.”

“And I simply said, ‘I think this guy is outstanding and is certainly somebody who is worthy of an interview,’” he added.

“And was it your understanding that Tony was going to effectuate that?” the Tribune asked.

“No,” Obama said. “What I knew was, and I don’t think this has been disputed, that he was one of a number of people within the Blagojevich circle who were, you know, helping to screen or interview potential candidates for administration posts.”

The job Obama recommended for his friend paid about $150,000 a year. However, Eric Whitaker is now an executive vice-president of the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the March 9, 2008, Sun-Times. That would be the same employer that pays Michelle Obama a salary of close to $350,000 as a vice president.

U. of I. medical school gave 2003 candidate unfair advantage (Chicago Way)
Lawrence Eppley
Kenneth Schmidt

FROM CHicago trib VIA

University of Illinois College of Medicine officials acknowledged Friday that an unqualified applicant pushed by Trustee Lawrence Eppley received an unfair advantage.

But in the 2003 Eppley case, the student seeking to transfer to the Chicago-based medical school had “very poor grades” in the beginning of his college career. The former University of Illinois at Chicago chancellor took the unusual step of agreeing to allow him to join the school if he could achieve, among other things, a better — but “not a spectacular” — score on the standardized test for medical school.

In documents connected to the case, school officials suggested that Eppley was acting as a go-between for an unnamed patron. The student never did transfer.

In one instance, Trustee Kenneth Schmidt, the board’s only medical doctor, forwarded a vitriolic e-mail from a friend who was enraged about an applicant’s denial: “When I can’t understand things at our U. of I. you know I have always come running to YOU,” the friend wrote. “This time, I’m not only running, I’m coming galloping to your doorstep in hopes that you can solve what to me is a more than egregious error on the part of the admissions committee.”
