Fox's "American Idol" scored primetime's biggest numbers Tuesday, as auds seemed to tire of inaugural coverage. Sure, ABC did solid numbers for its coverage of the inaugural balls, but news specials on CBS and NBC were not competitive with entertainment programs in their time periods. According to preliminary nationals for Nielsen, "American Idol" dominated Tuesday's opening hour with an 8.9 rating/22 share in adults 18-49 and 22.4 million viewers overall. It was down sharply from last week's two-hour premiere, as expected, but also came in more than 15% below the show's second Tuesday episode of a year ago. Still, it provided a strong lead-in for rookie drama "Fringe" (4.7/11 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall), which led or tied for the 9 o'clock lead in key young-adult demo categories.
NBC's "The Biggest Loser" was on the rise (3.9/9 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall), spiking sharply in its second hour after "Idol" went off the air.
As for the inauguration specials, ABC averaged a 3.7/9 in 18-49 and 12.6 million viewers overall from 8 to 10 p.m. for "Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration," peaking from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a 4.2/10 in the demo and about 14 million viewers overall. It stood as the night's second most-watched program, behind "Idol," and gave the network its best performance on the night since the "Dancing With the Stars" finale in November.

I was one of those. Well, I actually flipped between that and the biggest loser show.
Well, the American people need to have something that represents GOOD AND POSITIVE in their lives.
At my house it was Scrubs followed by American Idol. My house is an Obama-free zone.
It is a little disappointing, I suppose. On the one hand we have the phoniest of the phony trotting their pathetic acts of fantasy in public to attempt to wrest a few minutes’ celebrity from an entirely contrived arena, and on the other hand we have American Idol...
I watched The Biggest Loser (the show, not the newly sworn in President).
I watched a repeat of NCIS and then The Mentalist.
I did check in with Fox, and as a reward got to see Megyn Kelly in a very nice looking outfit.
I’m smiling thinking about it....(chuckle)
Damn, brains and a bod...that should be illegal.
Who the heck wants to watch Inaugural balls?
the fact that idol gets such high rates is why we have obama for president. i guess the idiots would like to have an “idol” style vote for the next election.
Well duh... jeez, who’s going to sit and watch folks masterbating over a guy who’s done nothing all night? ABC was beyond stupid for deciding it was going to put that crap on for hours upon hours.
Wow! I finally discovered something more boring, pointless and soul deadening than watching American Idol; watching a BHO inauguration.
