I asked a question earlier today regarding Obama's second oath-taking and the lack of a Bible. I had several good responses, including some which noted that the Constitution does not indicate that a Bible should be used, and one person even pointed out that the second President, John Adams, may have used a law book instead of the Bible. So, to those who gave thoughtful responses... Thank you.
However, now I have another question... And don't get me wrong, this is just a question. I'm not trying to bash Obama.
Fox News is reporting that the second swearing-in ceremony seems to have been a little less than transparent, and in a video on the FoxNews site, they suggest that the second ceremony had the feeling of being either hush-hush or poorly managed.
Could it be that with just four reporters invited, no advance notice, no video cameras allowed, and only a grainy audio from a reporter's hand recorder that this is a simple example of poor management, of which we can expect more during the next four years? Or is this Obama's idea of openness and transparency?
Why would John Adams swear on a law book? Sounds bogus to me. Historical revisionism?
Remember how badly the first two years of the Clinton administration came off?
This is de javu.
No grownups. No experience on doing anything. Petulant about getting questions within the sanctity of the press room?
No instincts on giving racial offense.
Watch for this president to disappear behind a wall of handlers and hand-oicked journalists. No press conferences.
Just pronouncements.
“hand-oicked”
Or hand-picked.
Gotta get my glasses checked.
This morning on one of the a.m. shows, an Obama representative (a black woman) was on talking about the black woman who was going to be managing the Obama administration’s social soirees and how she was going to be able to limit who got to come to Obama affairs. She remarked that it would be a hoot watching her tell “Steve Spielberg” that there was no invitation for him and on the other hand telling “Spike” (Lee) to come on to the party. A racist comment to my way of thinking. If a white Republican woman administration representative had made such a similar remark, the media AND every black leader in the country would be screaming “racist!” all day today and tomorrow. I find it rather hard to take that black racist remarks are OK. (On either side, there’s no need to be so touchy, but blacks in general obnoxiously sensitive about their own side of it, but then turn and think it’s cute whatever they choose to say about “Whitey”.
It was John Quincy Adams, not John Adams, and he did it to show that he was assuming a secular, not religious, office.
Yeah, it was so hush-hush that Fox news played a video of it.
It seems clear that Obama is in over his head. I have some concern that the rest of the world is watching.
You’re right, but I suspect that will start to wear a little thin, even for many of the white folk who voted for him. I’m going to settle back with my popcorn.
During my working years I kept a Bible in my desk. As I sit and write this post, I have a large study Bible at my side, a Bible in a Year paperback on my bedstand, a large print edition in my bookbag in the car.
Barack Obama, as a professed Christian, certainly should have his own Bible. As a church going family the girls must have had their own Bibles for Sunday school.
It’s STILL stupid. There’s no need to swear on a law book. It’s not inspired by God, it’s a work of man.
I’m thinking eventual backlash.
Guy lost me at “typical white person.”
For all the reasons you cite.
Amen! That's the best thing to do until the "fun" really begins over the next few months.
Here’s an article about the second oath of office...
Obama is sworn in for second time

Apparently some other Presidents have been sworn in twice, too...
