Computer help
my confuser

Posted on 02/01/2009 11:51:32 AM PST by bad company

Well, this is interesting. On my main computer when I turn it on, at the point that it should give me my desktop, it now just gives me a bunch of blue and white lines vertically up and down the screen. Anybody have any idea what this might be? Mt guess would be the video card, but I'm just guessing.

For the record I honestly don't remember if that computer is logged in or not.

My old laptop did this accompanied by ticking noises.
It was the hard drive in my case.
But it could be the video card if you hear no ticks.

Try logging in to Safe Mode. To do this, as soon as you get past the POST bootup (where it adds up your RAM) start tapping F8 repeatedly. At some point you should get a DOS screen asking you how to boot windows. Choose “Safe Mode”.

If you get the problem in Safe Mode too then you may want to shut it all down, unplug your video cord, open the case and unseat / reseat the video card and try again.

If that doesn’t fix it your video card is *most likely* toast.

Yep, no ticks this time. The hard drive was the last thing this thing needed about 3 years ago.

Check the cables, unplug them and plug them back in. Unplug the computer, open the case, and remove/re-seat the video card too. Clean out any accumulated dust in there while you have it open. If you have a different monitor or can borrow one, try a different monitor to see if it is the computer or the monitor...

Hope this helps.

use a cheap video card to swap in and check it.

My guess would be the power supply or the capacitors failing on the motherboard.

Something won’t let me log in to safe mode. The option comes up, but the up and down buttons on my keyboard do nothing. This is fun.

And here I was gonna suggest changin’ the oil and cleaning the fuel filter.
Gotta watch for that water in the gas ya know.

Well the muffler bearings are a bit old, but I’ve kept the driveshaft full of air so they should be good to go.

I’d squirt about 2 oz’s of RPM in there, after taking the bucket hose loose with a left handed Crescent wrench.

If that doesn’t work, then try taking a Sharpee, and (very carefully and in block print) writing APPLE on the faceplate.

I’m sure that’ll do the trick. :O)

Gotta watch for that water in the gas ya know.

I don't know about the gas powered PC's but with the diesel ones there's a bottle of stuff you can pour into the fuel tank that will cause the water to emulsify with the fuel and get it out of there as you burn the fuel.
