none | 2/7/09 | Self

Ok 2/7/09 I am saying I am an internet addict. I spend every free hour on FR, Amazon, , news sites, various message boards, playing games or emailing friends. I go to bed at midnight and get up at 6:30 AM How much more rich could my life be if I get help and has anyone gone through counseling for this?

Try vacation without a laptop.
Try other hobbies that are, or could become important to you.

I’m only two hours behind schedule today because of my addiction to the internet....

It's been said that the first step on the road to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Unfortunately, I've never heard what the second step is.

Your only hope is to force limits on yourself. Cancel your access to the internet. Sell your computer. Go to the library or an internet cafe to check your email and view pornography. It's the only way.

I recommend not stopping cold turkey. That could be more hazardous than the addiction itself.

Start with eliminating your visits to Amazon, game sites and e-mailing friends.

I quit cold turkey after the Nov. 5 election but now have fallen completely off the wagon. After, this train wreck of an simulus bill I may hop back on the wagon though (until the 2010 election campaign anyway).

You could also hire someone to condition you in a Pavlov’s bell type of way. Whenever you log onto a nonproductive website they whack you across the back of the neck with a thin wooden rod.

Interesting questions. Have you tried Googling them?

You're in luck.

You've come to the right place. FReepers are nothing if not compassionate, caring, and helpful.

I can see no downside to coming to us for help.

Well your addition to FR is understandable. And emailing is fun. I mean look on the bright side, at least you’re not addicted to porn.

A very relevant comment. I had the misfortune of having to spend some time at an island in the pacific many years ago and I was bored crazy. I was hungry for anything new. That's when I bought my first gun magazine...it became a very appropos hobby, in light of this day and age.

Florida is a beautiful state for relaxing. The information overload that occurs (guilty) through too much on demand internet access can be stressful. What did you do before the internet hobby became a habit?

And you’re asking US for help?

If we’d gotten counseling, we wouldn’t be here!

I've heard of people who do things other than spend all day on the internet.

I'm not sure I believe those people exist but one day I'm going to turn off the computer, go outside and see if there is anything to that claim.

One day.

But not today.
