Is Continued Aid Bad for Africa? Why I Agree with Zambian Economist Dambisa Moyo

Dambisa Moyo, the Zambian economist, educated at Harvard and Oxford and a former employee of The World Bank and Goldman Sachs, has created an inspiring, and provocative argument in her book titled “Dead Aid" - Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way for Africa.

It’s a small volume book which suggests that foreign aid to African nations, totaling over a trillion dollars in the past 60 years was a waste. She argues that it's bad for Africa, and for Africans. In her opinion Aid keeps Africa and Africans in a sub servant’s role at a critical time when its governments need to step up and become more self-sufficient. In her book she strongly recommends shutting off all foreign aid to African nations within 10 years.

This world renown author and economist shares critical information about the connection between free aid and corruption in Africa, and suggests that an alternative approach to relieving Africa from poverty would be much more beneficial than continued aid.

Let some other socialist country give aid to Africa...we’re tapped out.

It is time to start worrying about the U.S., under Obozo we are on exactly the same tack as Mugabee in Zimbawe.

Will our dollar soon be as worthless as the Zim?

Who is going to step in and help the evil U.S. when he totally collapses the economy?

Enough is Enough!

However, there are many, many other reasons why giving or sending billion dollar packages in the form of US dollars, for example, into small economies is very harmful. For example, you can see why having that kind of money flying into a country makes the government less inclined to raise money through other sources of capital because they have this steady flow of permanent income, what they perceive as permanent income coming in. The government develops what I call a ‘Lazy muscle’ and this breeds dependency which means that governments are not focused on actually building up other sources of capital such as the private sector which is important for growth. In particular it’s no surprise that things like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and even security are now being provided to Africa from outsiders and that leaves a situation where African governments have a questionable role – what is the role for African governments when they are not responsible for those things.

It seems this could just as easily apply to every government/liberal giveaway in the United States as well. It simply breeds laziness and kills any incentive to do something productive with your life.

Imagine you're an African farmer with a small plot of land to till. You borrow money for seed and fertilizer, work hard to raise a crop that is ready to go to market. Your produce will make a profit so next season, the loan for seed won't be necessary.
Just as your foodstuff arrives in the marketplace, 'free' food from the US arrives.

The left destroyed the black race in this country for the sake of votes and it has been doing the same for Africa.

** I believe it already is against the Euro.

Who is going to step in and help the evil U.S. when he totally collapses the economy?
** Maybe China if we stop calling them names.

Enough is Enough!
** Enough was enough 40 years ago!

Sad, but true! I consider myself a hardworking conservative however, if some gives me what I want after a while I will become dependent with a sense of entitlement. This can be applied across the spectrum from the welfare to the corporate population as we’ve seen with the bailouts!!
Whatever happened to the term “Pull yourself up by your own boot strings”

But that’s just my viewpoint!

I would not necessarily blame the left entirely for the blacks status although the the left has been very successful. Black Americans were overwhelmingly pro-republican until the so call ‘new deal’ when they thought they were going to get that three ancre and a mule if they just voted and waited - They’re still waiting and voting although all the mules have died and the land is gone!

Unfortunately, the left has been very successful in the white community as well as the majority of Americans receiving government assistance are White Americans. The left now have their man who can ‘spread the wealth’. Of course spreading the wealth will be contingent upon how successful they can continue the atmosphere of dependency!

Black Americans, although once self sufficient during the reconstruction era made a sudden shift to the left and has paid the price ever since.

This is just my personal opinion.

That would piss me off! Particularly when the bank expect me to repay the loan despite the odds! I Was raised on a farm and we took out loans to purchase equipment and seeds only to have the US government import the same crops we were raising for a living. We were simply told to ‘produce a better crop’ We worked harder and were paid less for our produce because it was either free or cheaper across town. Over a period of time the farms were slowly shutting down leaving many farmers in debt without government relief.

The farmers in Africa are in the same situation. They want to provide for their families and the country but aid is killing their spirit and motivation. Why labor 18 hours or more day in and day out just to end up competing with ‘free aid’.

It really sucks and its time for aid to stop flowing into Africa and make the government accountable. We make our leaders accountable so they can do the same.

I say cut the aid and watch the people prosper.
