Flag Day
The Ignorant Fishermen ^ | 6/13/09 | MBC I.F.

Remember when I led the parade? Hats came off and hands were placed over one's heart as I approached and passed by.

Remember where I have been and what I stand for— ANZIO, NORMANDY, LEYTE, IWO JIMA, KOREA, VIETNAM, the ongoing war on terror, etc. The memorial honor rolls of those who did not come back are saluted when you salute me.

There is a little known State Park about 8 miles north
of me, known as the “Middle Brook Encampment”. It is
where the STARS AND STRIPES first flew above an
AMERICAN military post.

June of 1777, Washington's main army was installed
in the foothills just north of what is now Bound Brook,
NJ.

It was a classic, high-ground-flanking position intended
to keep the British from advancing from New Brunswick
towards Philadelphia, along the old NY to Philly-main road.

Back in the 50's, the grammar school I attended in the People's Republic of Massachusetts (of all places) used to hold annual celebrations of Flag Day, where this poem was recited.

They'd probably hold flag burnings now if they thought they could get away with it.

Hats Off!

Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky:

Hats off!

The colors before us fly....
But more than the flag is passing by....
Days of plenty and years of peace;
March of a strong land's swift increase;
Equal justice, right, and law,
Stately honor and reverend awe;
Sign of a nation, great and strong
To ward her people from foreign wrong:
Pride and glory and honor,-all
Live in the colors to stand or fall.

Hats off!

Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;
And loyal hearts are beating high:

Hats off!

THE FLAG IS PASSING BY!

(Henry Holcomb Bennett)

Washington and his main army spent more time in
NJ than in any other colony during the Revolution.
This in order to contain and counteract the Brit's
occupation of NYC. From this position, his troops
could quickly flank and confront any enemy move-
ments towards Philadelphia or up the Hudson river.

Most of the military actions were of the “cat and
mouse” variety, but roughly 100 battles and
skirmishes were fought on Jersey soil.
