It’s a shame isn’t it, that Republicans continue to ignore Hispanics especially here in Texas? The writing has long been on the wall that unless the GOP begins to better work with Latinos, the GOP will continue to lose races and be a minority party.
It is equally important, of course, for the Latino community to realize that true political identity will be achieved only through participation in all national party structures - Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, etc. We are not all the same and we shouldn’t all be attracted to any one party.
Here in Texas, we have an open party primary because our founders knew the rich culture and political appetite for change would protect what is best for all Texans. It is in this free assembly that we all have a right to participate; no one guaranteed victory, but everyone given the chance to try, to be heard and to influence our society.

What does “work with Latinos” mean, Debra?
Is it code for “pander to Latinos, give Latinos special treatment, carry out the subjugation of other races that the worst of the Latinos desire”?
Aren’t the (old) Republican values of personal responsibility, limited government, and strong defense the best way to serve the needs of all AMERICANS, including those who happen to be Latino?
Why is not the idea of working to build a strong AMERICA for all AMERICANS (not singling out those of your ethnicity, Debra, for special treatment) not the best idea?

If the Republican Party goes to the Latinos with the policies that the great majority of Latinos vociferously want, welfare, free medical care, amnesty for the illegals and all their relatives and neighbors, then the Republican Party will be the Social Democrat Party and will do no better for votes because the Latinos will know which one is the Genuine Social Democrat Party and which one is the Johnny-come-lately. Those Latinos who have accepted traditional American values and have some understanding of working for their whole living, including medical care, will vote Republican. The others will vote SocDem regardless.
I wouldn’t vote for her. She makes no sense. How can she say on the one hand that the “GOP is ignoring” Latinos, implying that Latinos somehow are a special group requiring special treatment above and beyond that afforded all other Texans, but then on the other hand acknowledges that all persons should be given equal opportunity, implying no special treatment for any specific group.
It is Latinos who need to realize that they are afforded the same opportunities as anyone else, and should speak out loudly if they are discriminated against, but not demand special treatment themselves, which necessarily means that an institutionalized discrimination must be put in place against some other group.
The entire premise of this piece is a red herring. Why would anyone care about race unless the motive was to pander? My guess is the author believes ‘latinos’ is code for illegal alien. Otherwise, the message would ring true to any race who has conservative values. The reason the GOP ‘ignores’ illegals is they don’t have the backbone to call them for what they are and run them off. I think Debra might feel more at home in the dem party.
How is the GOP failing “Latinos” (aside from the ways they’re failing everybody)?
Not offering enough racial spoils? Not speaking enough Spanish?
Articles like this one always make me wonder, "How did America become the greatest nation in the world without these people before now?"
All the "values" this country had made it the greatest - all the "values" that have been added in the last three decades (in the name of diversity) have only brought decline.

Let me tell you a rags-to-riches story, Debra:
He was born in Honduras and came to the United States when he was 17. He spoke some English, but instead of demanding that he always have a "numero dos" option for his interactions with American society, he hit the books and within six years graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree from Columbia College. Three years later he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review (just like someone in the White House). After law school, he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, practiced law, and held posts as US Attorney and assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States. He was nominated by President George W. Bush to the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2001. For the next two years, Democrat Senators, encouraged and supported by Democrat interest groups, blocked his nomination from being voted on in the Senate through various parliamentary maneuvers including filibusters until that immigrant from Honduras, Miguel Estrada, withdrew his name from consideration.Compelling story, eh Debra? A Latino man who rose to very high positions after coming to this country knowing limited English, nominated by a Republican President and fought for by Republican Senators and Republican interest groups, only to be blocked by Democrat Senators and Democrat interest groups.
The backlash against those Democrats? Nada.
So take your RINO BS about ignoring Latinos and backlashes from Latino comedians who rely on non-Latino writers and lame laughtracks to appear funny, and stick it, Debra.

Is that why the GOP is currently ahead in hard core Democrat states like New Jersey for the governorship elections this year, and the GOP is ahead in the generic congressional race for 2010, and the GOP US Senate candidate Pat Toomey, is ahead for the US Senate race for PA, a state that voted solidly for 0bama in 2008?
Hey Debra, it's not about the GOP kowtowing to illegal immigrationamnesty, and crap like that(where did that nonsense get Mccaian?). It's about the GOP sticking to it's principles. Latino's that wish to abide by the GOP's principles can come in, same as any other race, creed or color.
It’s pretty clear that Debra is talking about simply having the conversation. Among the Republican grassroots of Texas, we are constantly lamenting that our message of limited government, strong families, strong values, strong defense and of personal responsibility doesn’t reach the Hispanic community. Every year we talk about how it’s getting worse. Every year we talk about how the vast majority of Hispanics agree with us on the social issues; they’re pro-choice, they’re pro-family, they’re pro-free market. Every year, we gripe and moan but we never talk! We never ask for their vote and every year they go in larger numbers to the party that offers them nothing but poverty, but because the party of stolen prosperity asks for their vote, they pull the blue lever in greater numbers.
Debra is saying have the conversation; be principled, don’t pander. You’d be surprised at the common ground that the Hispanic community has with conservative principles. Latinos by and large are conservative, they’re just not convinced the Republican party is. Talking might convince them that we are.

No, pal — they’re not content to just be Americans and Conservatives and Republican voters. They’re after SOMETHING ELSE. What? Just be honest with me, FRiend. Admit what they want. Is that so hard?
It'a shame we hear such blather all the time, from misguided Republicans and Latino 'leaders'. This article whines and complains, mentions the eternal need for Republicans to "reach out" to Latinos, but as always, fails to provide any specific program for what the "reaching out" would involve.
Maybe because they have no clue what to do other than imitate the Dims, and we ca all predict how well that would turn out, or did turn out in Juan McCain's case.
Because no one is asking them to vote Republican! No one is communicating to them what Conservative Republicans believe. All they see is the crooked, crony politics that the Republican elected officials have offered.
With the exception of response #14, it looks like kneejerk reactions simply because she had the audacity to speak to a Hispanic group. She clearly says on her websites that she is against illegal immigration, here are two such statements.

The most compassionate thing We Texans can do is stop illegal immigration.

She says that the other candidates in the Governor’s race have also failed to heed what voters are saying on another hot-button issue: border security. The federal government has failed in its constitutional duty to protect the border, she says, and it may be up to the state to do something.
“I’m starting to get pressed real hard on illegal immigration,” she says. “There is a lot of hostility on this issue.”
She admits she hasn’t come up with a hard and fast solution – but is working with watchdog groups like US Border Watch to determine the best way to address the problem.
“They’ve done a very good job of documenting the problem,” she says. “I’m working real hard on finding a solution to that problem.”
Do you see a problem with those statements? I don't. The only thing I see is another instance of eyes glazing over when they see the word Hispanic and automatically equating it with the word "illegal" which is one of the things that annoys me on FR. And FYI...many Hispanics are against illegal immigration:
71.5% of likely voters said they agree (including 47.8% who strongly agree) that local law enforcement officers should enforce federal immigration laws, including 51.5% of Hispanics and 56.2% of self-described "liberals."
