The Left presents itself as the party of enlightened tolerance, manning the garrisons against right-wing hatemongers who are eager to turn back the clock to the Dark Ages (the 1950s). But last night on MSNBCs Hardball, Chris Matthews used a Fifties-era phrase coined to mock homosexuals.
Matthews guest, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, began the segment by plugging his upcoming appearance on Dancing with the Stars. The 62-year-old Texan joked that he found only one drawback to his new gig, holding up the shoe he must wear. That inspired this exchange:
Matthews: Thats a little pump, isnt it?DeLay: Its a little pump, with high heels.
