Founded in 1958, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has been the primary organization representing individuals over the age of 50. According to AARP, the group has a membership of 40 million and is listed as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. The AARP includes a Public Policy Institute which promotes legislation related to those over 50 years of age.
AARP's Mission Statement reads the group's goal is "to enhance the quality of life for all as we age, leading positive social change and delivering value to members through information, advocacy and service."
The AARP has come under criticism in the past for what many believe has been the endorsement of a liberal political agenda...

60,000 quitting out of a membership of 40,000,000 is a .15% drop in membership.
Their place at the liberal trough of our cash is more important than a .15% drop in membership any given month. Even if that rate sustained itself for 6 months they’d lose a whopping .9% of current membership.
It’s not a big enough dent for them to care.
It is called a “start”.
If in fact they really have 40 million members.
Maybe so, and I don’t really care either. But the PERCEPTION that this is hurting them is out there and it’s growing. I said Screw AARP back when they started sending me crap when I was in my 40s and as long as the perception helps to keep their liberal nanny-staters at bay, it’s all good. And if they lose enough members to actually do some damage, all the better.
40 million?
That start would have to very quickly ramp up to a million a month before it might put a dent in AARP’s socialist armor.
Agreed - bout time members woke to what this organization is all about. Had to start somewhere. Just think - how many members will they lose if Obamacare rationing goes through????
It is no more a “start” than would be 50 women quitting NOW.
It is called a start.
I did my part. No longer a member.
If you bothered to read the article it claims the AARP has 40,000,000 members. Yes, they are in fact that big.
Factual articles I scanned to support this had their membership pegged at 35 million but they were published in 2002. I have no reason to believe that they have not gained 5 million members in 7 years given the generational growth of their target membership as a percentage of population.
I’m 55. My wife and I never joined and never will, barring major shifts in agenda.
So they claim. Liberals lie about everything.
I left years ago as soon as I discovered what a liberal socialist democrat nazi organization it is.
40,000,000 LIVING members?
Or does that include all of those members who have graduated to another plane of existance (dead)?
Just wondering if they purge their member lists of dead members or if they kind of remain their for propaganda purposes.
BUt supposedly there are apporx 90 million over the age of 50. AARP is claiming membership of nearly half of that age group —— I don’t think so. If the mailing list that AARP is what is used then it could be any number of members. They send me crap all the time and I pay no dues and only just send there envelopes back to them with theadverts they sent me. I don’t trust any numbers they give me
And the “numbers” you quote are selfrepoting from AARP. Notice they do NOT claim 40 million DUES paying members.
Seniors will probably lose benefits, but more importantly they will lose doctors. For many physicians, private insurance payments make it possible for them to stay in business and care for those with government insurance. My prediction is much longer wait times to see doctors and much shorter appointment times if you are lucky enough to get in.
What AARP needs is some competition—another national “seniors” organization that is not loony leftist.
