Kennedy Liked to Joke About Chappaquiddick
Stop the ACLU ^ | 28 Aug 09 | John Stephenson

From Kennedy’s close friend Ed Klein:

I don’t know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, “have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?” That is just the most amazing thing. It’s not that he didn’t feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.

Ed Klein thinks this is laudable??

“I bet he ain’t laughing now”

Exactly my thought as I read the story. The captain of the SS Oldsmobile was sicker than I thought.

This is despicable. The only ridiculous aspects of this tragic event were his behavior, the story he tried to pass off and the fact that he was not prosecuted for his crime.

It’s ridiculous, but it’s not funny.

I wonder if ol’ Teddy is laughing now with that red hot skewer being rammed up his ***.

What complete nonsense.

I'm not aware of a jot of evidence of Edward having the merest trace of remorse or the tiniest tippy-tap of a conscience pang about having left Mary Jo K to die an horrific death so (apparently) he wouldn't face DUI related culpability.

If he would joke about the incident, then he was a more hideous scoundrel than even I suspected.

It all boils down to the fact that he and the rest of the Kennedys feel that they are an elite ruling class to whom the laws, even the laws of decency, do not apply. If his name had been Teddy Smith and not Teddy Kennedy, he would've served 20 years for manslaughter for Mary Jo's death.

“It was nine hours before he reported the accident. In the meantime, he walked back to his motel, complained to the manager about a noisy party, took a shower, went to sleep, ordered newspapers when he woke up and spoke to a friend and two lawyers before finally calling the police. Divers later estimated that if he had called them immediately, they would have had time to pull out Mary Jo. She had not drowned, but had survived in an air pocket inside the car - she was asphyxiated only when the oxygen ran out several hours later”

Just.

F**king.

Hilarious.

I don't think this will serve the Kennedy legacy well but it may increase book sales for Klein and sadly that's what it's all about.

I didn’t realize that he enjoyed Chappaquiddick jokes.

It reminds me of something that happened quite a long time ago. Teddy was visiting some neighbors of ours, where we vacation in the summer. It was shortly after the Queen Elizabeth II, which was cruising up the coast, went aground on an uncharted reef off of the Cape.

I was in the clubhouse kitchen helping the ladies wash up dishes and pots after the children’s spaghetti dinner, and was telling them a joke that was going round; namely, that the uncharted reef was actually Ted Kennedy’s car. At that moment, who should walk into the kitchen behind me, looking like a thundercloud, was the hostess Teddy was staying with. Evidently she didn’t think much of the joke.

Now, years later, I hear that Kennedy enjoyed those jokes. If I’d known that, I could have told her to lighten up and pass it along. Now, sadly, it’s too late.

Did you hear Ted Kennedy's girlfriend told him she was pregnant?

He said they would cross that bridge when they came to it.
