The incandescent light bulb has only two years to live. As part of the 2007 Energy bill, the bulbs must be phased out between 2012 and 2014. And the bill is already having a negative effect on American Industry:
Last month, GE announced it will close the Winchester Bulb Plant 80 miles west of D.C. As a result, 200 men and women will lose their jobs. GE is also shuttering incandescent factories in Ohio and Kentucky, axing another 200 jobs.
GE blamed environmental regulations for the closing. The first paragraph of the companys July 23 press release explained:
A variety of energy regulations that establish lighting efficiency standards are being implemented in the U.S. and other countries, in some cases this year, and will soon make the familiar lighting products produced at the Winchester Plant obsolete.
The truth is the GE Plant being closed is falling victim of legislation that GE Pushed through.... As for the rest of us, there is a different problem, the fluorescent bulbs just don't give off enough light. The real story is for a very small benefit to the environment, the United States is willing to throw people out of work, and ruin the eyesight of the rest of us:

These people are getting flushed down the ‘environmentally friendly’ toilet.

Well, it’s not like we NEED the jobs...
Thank you George W. Bush.
I will burn candles in my home before I will use the lightbulb dictated by the government. What happened to your freedom?
Thank you, Congress.
I have a good stock of incandescents now. The fluorescents save me some money for lights on most of the night. But for short on time applications, bathrooms, closets, storage rooms, they are a pain to wait for them to light up.
Liberals are forever preaching “compassion”, and yet the laws they pass cause misery.
Blamed environmental regulations from the people it supprts to this day. Lets them close down US jobs and move factories to China.
I guess green jobs are a negative value.
So they can then step in and rescue us.
book mark
The esthetics takes some getting used to, but two 32-watt, 48” fluorescent tubes make an excellent replacement for a 60-watt incandescent bulb. Our house glows like something out of E.T. since we made the switch.
You get about 4x the lumens for the same wattage, and the new generation of fluorescent fixtures don’t have any annoying hum or 60 Hz migraine-producing effect. “Ott” lights, using similar technology, make excellent reading lamps.
While I’m not saving on electricity, the visibility is awesome.
Liberals are little control freaks... mean nasty petty control freaks.
“I will burn candles in my home before I will use the lightbulb dictated by the government. What happened to your freedom?”
It was lost in the transition from Republic to Democracy...
“Liberals are little control freaks... mean nasty petty control freaks.”
Leftists have managed to produce over 120 million killed in less than a hundred years...thats what I call needing to be in control...
Next thing you know, the government will be setting up a “Department of Candles”. I’ve said it before, I feel like I’m living in an Ayn Rand novel in an Orwellian nightmare.
Liberals want to control what we (middle class Americans) eat, smoke, listen to on radio, read in newspapers, write on the net, put in our light sockets, put in our cars etc.
When it come to them - liberals want total freedom. They defend the "rights" of pedophiles, criminals, pornographers, every brand of lowlife known to man... drug addicts, welfare cheats, gangbangers...
Every time I go shopping I buy a few more incandescents. This home will not be without incandescent light in my lifetime. I’d advise everyone else to do the same.
