I know I need Windows 7. But, I have used xp for years. Just got a laptop with Vista a few weeks ago. My pc died and now I'm stuck temporarily with my vista laptop. Here's my problem that is driving me crazy!! Sometimes copy/paste will work with right click, sometimes not(on web sites/email, never when it used to) Spellcheck will show the misspelled word, but the right click does nothing!! Why??? No right click page reload either! Is this just one of the reasons people hated Vista?? This is insane!
Vista is garbage.
Go figure out why your PC died. It’s probably fixable.
Have you tried using a different mouse? Could be the hardware and not the software.
I am on Vista now(Yeah I know, it sucks, gonna upgrade soon to Windows 7) but I have never had that issue. Very strange.
And by “different mouse” I meant a plug-in mouse...I realize it’s a laptop...lol
Wife says she had the same problem.
Fix is to have both windows open prior to the cut and paste.
Not sure why that is, but hope this helps.
I am fixing my pc. The video card died. Waiting for another one to arrive. Just didn’t know if this was a fixable Vista problem,,, am I doing something wrong or what??? No right click page reload, no copy/paste with right click and no spell check. I have put plugged a mouse in and still no go. It is not the buttons, it is the software.
exactly right, My old usb wireless mouse would not right click either, but my new one will with vista.
I will try that later,, going to bed now and will look this over tomorrow. Thanks for any help. I bought this laptop just to have one and then a few days later my video card on my desktop popped. So, already ordered another. Decided to use the laptop I just bought and already hate Vista!! Arrgh!
Same here, I just had to buy a new PC and am stuck with Vista until HP gets around to sending me my free upgrade. Can’t be soon enough.
So many inconvenient features on Vista, plus I do not like the Open Office that came with the PC. Took me 15’ to figure out how to reset the margins and still doesn’t do it. Will get back to Word ASAP. So nice to spend the $$ and be just as frustrated as I was with the former PC that was circling the drain.
Vista has been great for me and am now on 7 and it’s even better.
What you describe sounds like a hardware issue or a driver issue...if it’s a laptop...contact your OEM for the proper driver.
They will cause just the problems you are having.
Good Luck. Dropped vista years ago and never looked back. Changed three systems over to XP too.
Logitech makes a pretty good wireless/usb mouse. Had the same prob.
The exact same thing happened to me. For months there were no problems. Then one day, after an update, I couldn't copy and paste from an internet article to a Works (which I hate) document. This went on for some time and then recently, voila, it worked again. No idea why.
Perhaps it is another of their built in irritants?
I ran a scan provided by microsoft to see if Win 7 would be compatible with my programs. It said I can install 32 bit win 7. I have 64 bit Vista now. I don't think this is right!
I can't afford new hardware and software every time Bill Gates gets a wild hair. There is over a thousand bucks worth of image edit software on this rig, it has to last as long as I do.
Yep, that’s the typical Vista stuff. I got suckered into buying a laptop with Vista. Fortunately I rarely use it. When I finally needed to retire my Windows Me box, I wasn’t going to be suckered again. Got a nice used XP box from an eBay seller who seemed to be a small-time professional at this sort of thing. It had been put back to the original factory set-up with the original set-up/recovery disks included. $175 including shipping. I highly recommend this avenue.
Unless your Vista craptop is one of the early Vista versions, there’s a way to make it give you the “classic” view. That should help a bit, but I don’t think it comes close to solving all the aggravating quirks and dysfunctionalities.
That never worked for me. What worked was using the pull-down menus instead of right-clicks. But it was totally random when right-clicks would or wouldn't work.
I’ve never had a problem with Vista. You do realize that just about everything is customizable in Vista, so you can set it up to your preferences, right? There is no reason to use the default settings, if you prefer it the XP way or your own way.
Wife has had Vista on her laptop since it was initially released.
After much trial and error, the problem seems to be related to the app and how the os handles clipboard data (i.e. html vs. unicode) in relation to how specific apps handle that data.
This appears to be a software issue as opposed to hardware, and may be as simple a fix as a configuration setting.
Hopefully someone can provide more information?
Just change the name and hope the suckers won't notice ... until after they buy it.
Also give them a little money if you like the product.
If your mouse isn't working right, you have to go into Device Manager and install the mouse as a HID (human interface device) instead of a USB mouse.
Mot everyone is or wants to be a computer geek
Let's think like normal adults a minute here.
Can we agree that most people who upgrade to Vista upgrade from XP?
Why then, aren't the default settings the closest emulation of the XP? The user can then enjoy (?!) his new computer to do the work he is used to doing with a minimum of frustration, and then learn and use all the gee-whiz "improvements" as his time and curiosity permit?
Too simple? Too logical?
What?
You practically need a degree in computer technology to ‘customize’ Vista. It’s not so easy. I figured out ways to work around the quirks, but IMHO XP is still better, as in ‘easier to use.’ Try getting Bluetooth to work with Vista if you’re up to a challenge. With XP you just plug it in and it works.
You don’t have to be a geek. You just set it up to your preferences, which are clearly explained in the help and support pages under the Start menu. Virtually every complaint I’ve seen about Vista was due to the user not bothering to read the documentation.
By the way, what would be the point of having it perform exactly like XP? If you want XP then buy XP, but don’t buy Vista and then complain because it is different than XP. That’s like buying a power boat and then complaining it doesn’t have sails.
Vista runs circles around XP for the people who know how to use it.
I’ve never had problems with Bluetooth on Vista. You turn on the device and make 2 mouse clicks and you are done.
how the heck do i customize?
This doesn’t sound like a Windows problem. It sounds like a browser problem. What browser are you using?
Clipmate.com
Great program, have used it for years without a problem and currently using it with Vista.
Is that with Firefox?
This reminds me of an old joke:
Patient: “Hey doc, it hurts when I push on my chest with my finger, and when I touch my forehead, and when I push on my leg.”
Doctor: “Your finger is sprained.”
Are you sure your mouse isn’t broken?
I had a problem with right click not working and it was because of the Yahoo toolbar not being good for use with Firefox.
Turned off the toolbar and right click now works.
Would you believe it has no problem with IE?
Go figure!
What really drives me wild with Vista is that every $#%^& time there is an update and the computers restarts, I get the "grey screen of death" with "Startup repair" running for fricking-ever before I can use the computer.
Other than that, Vista 64 has few drivers to work with other devices and it will not share itself with any other computers. It will use them but it doesn't allow others to use it as a server/base.
I had that same issue after the “super patch Tuesday” update, although it was an XP box.
I rebooted back into the OS, then turned it off, and took the battery out for a while. Then booted it back up, and presto, everything worked. I think it might have had to do with a corrupt or interrupted installer from one of the patches.
Can you just pull the graphics card and run off motherboard graphics until your new card comes in?
Windows XP should detect and configure it easily.
You’re lucky!
Right click function depends on what program you are using. If you are having trouble with Firefox, try using Internet Explorer instead. If your trouble is with Open Office, use Microsoft Office instead . . or reinstall Open Office. Your problem doesn’t sound like it is coming from Vista.
It could be a mouse problem or it needs a registry tuneup. I suggested to freemike that he use a utility to clean his registry.
Anyone know how to replace a mother board on a Dell 1705 with Vista Ultimate?
yeah, it works in internet explorer, but not firefox. Never had a problem with xp. I guess it’s a vista thing.
Nope, it is a FireFox thing. Just unistall Firefox, reboot, and reinstall Firefox if you must.
You can also try Chrome Browser . . it is much faster than Firefox.
Go to TigerDirect. They have videos for everything.
Thanks David and Mike
