No Recession for Tedford

Bethany Stotts, November 10, 2009

California students and furloughed faculty will be feeling the pinch this academic year. Not so for University of California head coach, Jeff Tedford. He’s going to get $2.8 million for the upcoming football season.

Yes, the University of California system, despite its budget crises, will give Jeff Tedford $2.8 million this year. The California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley also has a planned $430 million makeover.

How high has Tedford’s salary climbed as of late? A 2004 press release from UC Berkeley regarding his 5-year contract states that “Coach Jeff Tedford, credited with turning around the Golden Bears’ football fortunes, will stay on at Cal under a new five-year contract that nearly doubles his base salary to $1.5 million a year, Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau and Athletic Director Sandy Barbour announced at a press conference today (Monday, Dec. 6).”

In 2004 his base salary was “nearly double[d]” to $1.5 million a year”; after extending his 5-year contract, his salary’s now ballooned to $2.8 million.

Let’s not forget that California still faces a budget gap of up to $14.4 billion. And, according to USA Today, the UC Berkeley campus, which houses the Memorial Stadium, has “taken a near $150 million cut in state funding” and has imposed a series of financial cuts impacting both students and faculty.

The paper also reports that at least 25 college head football coaches will make $2 million or more this football season....

And if they paid him more and recruited some extra players maybe they could beat some teams. This year has sucked.

But hey to Bethany Stotts ——if you don’t like it become a football coach and then you too can earn some legit cash

I see the Liberals are out attacking college football coaches again (even some faux-cons do it as well)

College coaches are paid mostly from athletic budgets....which are privately-raised funds from athletic department....not taxpayers.

Only a small portion of Tedford’s salary is paid by the school (probably under $150K)....the rest of the salary is paid from ticket sales, boosters (private contributions), advertising revenue, and other private sources

Judging by the amount of liberal, global, and diversity trash spewed by the faculty and admin of schools like Cal....they deserve to make less money than the coaches

Coaching: one of the only university jobs that is remotely capitalist. Football and basketball coaches get big money since the NCAA and universities get big money from the networks and fans.

Most big-time football/basketball programs subsidize the rest of their college sports.

“Where they were provided, USA TODAY found that the average public-school subsidy for athletics was $8.8 million.”

Too bad this number was not broken down by sport. By the way, if UC Berkeley were to win the Pac-10 (yeah, right!), they would get around $13 million for being in the Rose Bowl. This would be in addition to all of the other monies collected.

The reason that many of the public schools spend so much money is that if they get a winning program, they won't be spending the average on athletics.

And his salary will look really bad when Stanford stomps all over Cal and regains the Axe in the Big Game.

It could certainly use a makeover, since its facilities are totally inadequate.

I get that the California schools are impacted by the budget crisis and that they have to cut back. The only thing that bothers me about this is these “furlough” days for professors.

I have a daughter, freshman at SDSU. Most of her classes have these furlough days which means there is no class or contact between the professor and the students.

I have to say that this PISSES me off no end.

She is an out of state student with no financial help from the state at all. Between the two of us we have taken out nearly $19,000 in loans. I am glad to do that as this is the school she really wanted to attend and she is doing great there.

But, what PISSES me off is that we PAY for these classes. As anyone who has gone to school knows, credits are usually based on the number of hours a class meets a week. Most are 3 credit classes and meet 3 hours a week. We are paying for 3 hours a week, 3 credits, but they are not meeting that much.

Cut elsewhere, but this a money directly paid to the school by the parents and students that is not being used for what it is intended. FRAUD!

Did I mention that this PISSES me off?

I was compelled to come and gloat all over your oh so erroneous post Dr. Plutarch! Tedford's 2.8 million was worth every penny to beat $tanfurd and hold on to the axe for another year.

Any season in which the Bears beat the Stanford Trees is a winning season for us. :-)

Cal 34, Stanford 28 - Golden Bears win a Big Game for the ages!

Rub it in you do RGBS. A different story it would have been told if our $1.25 million/year Coach Harbaugh had only run Toby Gerhart instead of passing when we had it on the Cal 13 down by 6 with 1 min 25 sec left on the clock.

That's where Teford earns his additional $1.55 million/year. Sense enough to run a play that our Grandmothers would have called!

I know. What a crazy call. Phew. Thankfully. We'll take it. And, we did it without our man, Jahvid Best. Not to rub it in some more, but remember this? I do.... (I'm there in the background!).
