PLAINS, GA (WALB) – A doll found hanging off of a building in Plains is causing controversy.Controversial enough to get the United States Secret Service involved.

Witnesses say it was an image of President Barack Obama with a rope around his neck and the display was found hanging in one of the city's most recognizable sites dedicated to former President Jimmy Carter.A few people were able to snap pictures of the black doll before it was taken down.

The doll was hanging on a building on Main Street in Plains."I saw this stuffed thing hanging up," said Alonzo Davis, Plains Resident.Davis is one of the people who saw the doll hanging off the brick building, he said a sign on the front had President Obama's name on it.

"People have seen it and have the pictures but no body is talking bout it," said Davis. "I don't think it's right I don't know if it's someone horse playing or what".

Flashback: October 29, 2008 West Hollywood California Sarah Palin Hung in effigy..

I recall the non outrage from the press, police, and everyone else...

latimes.com/2008/oct/29 "Uproar continues over Palin effigy W. Hollywood display breaks no laws, say authorities, including the Secret Service."(Notice the quote here)

Offensive as it may be, the Palin doll -- outfitted with beehive wig, glasses and a vintage Neiman Marcus red coat dress -- appears to violate no law, said officials of the Secret Service, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Los Angeles city Code Enforcement Division.

"The sheriff made this clear: This is a country that has freedom of speech, and we protect that right even when we think it's idiotic and stupid and in bad taste," said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.

"If it is nonviolent and doesn't cause any problems, then they have the right to do it."

The person(s) who hanged the Palin effigy and as well as the person(s) who hanged the Obama effigy should be arrested and put on trial in their communities.

Thanks for the context. I forgot that it’s OK to lynch, shoot, or burn effigies of Republicans. Now I know it’s only racist to do that against Democrats.

I disagree on both incidents. Then again, I truly do believe in freedom of speech and hanging a political personage in effigy is protected speech.

"Right..I am sure the secret service was all over it when this happened to Bush."

For what reason would the Secret Service have been any less diligent during the Bush administration than they are now?

By George, someone who gets it. That would be my best guess.
