Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula first came to prominence in Saudi Arabia in May 2003. There is absolutely no proof that Gitmo had anything to do with the group’s formation. The first operational leader of AQAP was killed in June 2003.

More than 10.000 Yemenis took part in the Afghanistan jihad against the Soviet Union. Many returned to Yemen where they joined the Salafist movement in the region south of Sanaa and in the mountains to the east. OBL, while in Saudi Arabia in 1990, funded and armed an Al Qaeda inspired revolt in Yemen. Al Qaeda then took part in the 1994 revolution which united North and South Yemen, but left the north an uneasy alliance of Islamic leadership (many Muslim Brothers) and Islamist revolutionaries. Yemenis were present when OBL formed his umbrella organization in Afghanistan in 1998. In sum, Gitmo had nothing to do with the foundation of Al Qaeda in Yemen and Saudi Arabia; it has, however, supplied much needed leadership from
the Islamists released from that prison.

Obi should read this article dated December 20, 2000, from CNN regarding the USS Cole bombers. Note that the article even pre-dates the 9-11 attacks by almost a year and certainly pre-dates the opening of GITMO:

U.S. and Yemeni investigators have found evidence linking Bin Laden's Al Qaeda group to the Cole bombing in the harbor of Aden, Yemen, although they say they are not yet ready to accuse bin Laden of ordering the attack.
