Type Of Pistol

Posted on 01/11/2010 8:43:57 PM PST by Rose Commander

Hi, everybody. I got a question. I am in the market for a new pistol. I was recommended a Hi-Point .45 ACP pistol for a home defense weapon. I am curious as what do you all recommend. Please state a pistol that is at least a .40 or larger and it is $400 or less.

Thank you.

Check out Springfield Arms selection of weapons. The XD is superior to the Glock and cheaper.

if you’re looking for a home defense weapon why not get a 12 gauge pump shotgun? easier to aim in the dark.

Respectfully... if you know what you are doing, a 22 works just fine. Buy something you can handle with ease. You don"t have to vaporize them, just ventilate them a bit.... just sayin...

Sweet! I’ve been looking for a bare-bones Model 1911. And I REALLY like the price. I’ll have to go check one out. Is that a parkerized finish?

Now, if I could get one that would vaporize the intruders, dayum would that be cool. “Set phasers on ‘cook’”.

I would question your $400 limit. How much is your self-defense worth? I’d recommend a 1911 .45ACP. There’s some Colt’s in that range especially used. But I’d recommend the Kimber’s.

Your mileage may vary.

Easy question. With $400 budget, go buy a used Glock.

Don’t know why you seem to want .40 and larger. 9mm is fine for personal defense (with the proper load) and the ammo is cheaper. If this is your first handgun, I couldn’t suggest strongly enough that you go 9mm over .40 or .45.

You should be able to find a good condition used Glock 17 or 19 for $400.

A 9mm put in the same place as a 40 or 45 will kill them just as dead.

How good a shooter are you?

Get a Glock 19.

Good choice. I bought one of those a few years back. Plenty of “bang for the buck”. I’d recommend it too.

But to add, stay away from Hi-Point.

Mossberg Home Defender or any 12 ga pump shotgun with the shortest legal barrel.

You said “home defense” right, not plinking at cans or shooting at the range. Especially in an urban or suburban area, a large caliber handgun is more of a danger to your family and neighbors than it is of value as a defensive weapon.

I had a Springfield Armory 1911 but sold it. Now I have a Glock 19 and a Taurus Slim (for concealed carry), both in 9mm.

But I really miss my 1911. I wouldn't mind having a Kimber, but I don't want to spend that much money. I'd rather use the difference to buy ammo.
