The Madden Oracle: Videogame Predicts Super Bowl Winner

New Orleans Saints fans, break out the champagne. Indianapolis Colts fans, time to put on the sackcloth and ashes. The Saints have narrowly defeated the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, 35-31. At least, according to a videogame.

In what has become its own yearly tradition over the past six years, the "Madden" NFL videogame series by publisher Electronic Arts offers its prediction of the big game's victor. And it's almost always right. The game has correctly augured 5 out of the past 6 games. In last year's correct prediction, it even described with near-accuracy how the game would play out.

Scared yet? You should be. The artificial 'intelligence' behind "Madden" is approaching a time-travel level of accuracy, rivaled only by Marty McFly's sports almanac in the "Back To The Future" movies. So how does the videogame do it?

EA simply puts the game on with both teams controlled by the CPU and let them have at it. Underlying the virtual Super Bowl are hard numbers: player's stats and skill levels are programmed in. Uncannily, this has allowed "Madden" its streak of winning picks.

What it doesn't account for are things like injuries, players' nerves, and oh... human free will. Don't worry, that's probably coming in next year's edition.

Here's Madden's prediction of how the game will end this year (spoiler alert?):

"...with minutes left in the game the duo of Joseph Addai and Peyton Manning put the Colts back on top with a go-ahead touchdown pass. With the game hanging in the balance, Drew Brees hits David Thomas for an 11-yard touchdown and the game winning score." WOW! Play by Play simulation?
We need to apply this technology to future political candidates with their first probable year in office as the ‘game’ covered!

I’m predicting the Saints will win, but it seems like a lot are going with the Colts.

Forget it because the bummer has picked/endorsed the saints and so far his endorsements have not bode well.

And it's almost always right.

Or, to put it another way, it's sometimes wrong.

This household's teams are the Packers and the Jets, but I've been watching the Saints all season and have to say that's one powerful team. Powerful as all hell.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that the Colts have what it takes to beat the Saints.

No way the Saints win. Can’t happen. They are the Chicago cubs of football. Blowout with the game over by halftime. That’s my prediction.

"Blowout with the game over by halftime. "

What is it that Tony Dungy, former Colts coach, said about this game?

I don’t know what Dungy said but if it was that most Superbowls are dull he’s right. If it was something else you’ll have to enlighten me.

Could it have predicted the refereeing in the Vikings vs. Saints game? I think not.
