Request for advice from Freepers that moved to Texas, fellow FReeper considering it.

Posted on 02/09/2010 1:10:32 PM PST by erod

Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could give a fellow conservative some advice on moving to Texas. I am currently living in Chicago, and I am fed up with the taxes, cold weather, Democratic culture and bad economy here. I am seriously considering a move to Texas, I am fairly young, 26, and I am almost done with my degree in marketing, although I currently posses a B.A. in journalism. I think Texas sounds really cool and I just wanted to get advice from fellow FReepers who have either made the move from other states to Texas or FReepers who currently live there.

Some of my questions are: 1. Do you like Texas better than your former state or why do you think Texas is second to none? 2. Out of the two cities there: Dallas and Houston, which one is the better one to live in? (Basically I want the city that least resembles Chicago, but is fun to live in and doesn’t end up costing me an arm and a leg in rent and taxes) 3. How’s the economic climate in Texas? I know we’re in the midst of a recession but what’s the unemployment rate etc.

Those are just some sample questions feel free to tell me about your move or whatever other advice you can give if you can. Thanks for responding to my thread, God Bless. -Eric

now reside outside of Austin.

hey neighbor, I’d send him to Austin as well given the thousands of grad students around UT since he’s single... just moved to Liberty Hill (love that name) and the Hill Country people around us are the friendliest on earth!! Simply amazing hospitality...now if I could just learn to not fall off the Buckskin. If the OP is conservative, come on down and help cancel out weirder ATX!

ymmv

Perhaps unqualified to suggest (non-resident), but BNSF headquarters is in Fort WeirdWorth. They may have openings in marketing or publicity depts.

They are, by far, the best Class-1 Railroad in this country, and they are MAKING MONEY.

I'd consider going to work for BNSF, if I didn't have to move to a place where it's routinely 110 degrees F in the summer.

Texas is more than just Dallas, Houston. It is 800 plus miles north to south and the same east to west. How far would 800 miles get you out of Chicago? That’s what you are looking at in Texas.

You’ll find regions varying from the Piney Woods of east Texas, 300 plus miles of the Gulf Coast, Hill Country, Big Bend, Prairies/Lakes, Plains, etc. Each area offers different perspectives for you to enjoy depending upon your taste. People will be friendly but attitudes/customs may vary depending upon the norm for that region.

You mention Houston and Dallas. The Houston area is the 4th largest in the US with some 4+ million people. Dallas/Fort Worth would be smaller and a total different feeling/makeup. If you had time it may be to your advantage to spend some time just browsing around the state.

Good luck.

Naah, those are the right colors. Red is communist, not Republican.

Look at the lower right corner by Louisiana.
Harris and Jefferson counties (and usually Orange county as well)
Note the color key. Blue - McLame / Red - Mr. Dunham
Do not move behind enemy lines unless you have to. It's a beautiful area, just very liberal.
I've lived here in SE Texas and the Golden Triangle all of my life and the area has been Democrat the whole time, though things are slowly, yet definitely, changing.

Don't tell him about the mosquitoes.

Some things, folks should just experience for themselves.
