Do Convicted Felons Deserve a Second Chance? Obama Thinks So.

Should convicted felons be given a second chance? Barack Obama thinks so, and he thinks the tax payers should have to foot the bill. He made his view on this issue more than evident during a town hall meeting in Elyria, Ohio on January 22nd. Here is a excerpt from this Ohio town hall meeting, where a 29 year old felon who has never had a job in his life asks Obama if he will help felons get a job:

Jerome the felon asks Obama: “I’m 29 years old, and I’ve never had a job in my life. I went to jail when I was younger. It’s like hard to get a job as a felon. Is this — any programs that hire people with felonies like something that — because it’s sad, it’s like — 29 years old, I’m 29.”

Why? Is Obama a convicted criminal?

Socialism at its lowest. Punish those who are responsible, reward the losers.

Any moral hazard in that formula? Nah.

10-1 the person was black.

I’m glad I got a second chance and no it didn’t cost the taxpayers a thing. All it took was a decent economy.

Indeed,we all deserve a second chance, but it is up to the individual to provide a second chance for themselves not the taxpayers. In fact I got a second chance myself, and all it took was a little hard work on my part

Why shouldn’t people get a second chance.
My Dad was a felon. He got a second chance and lived a good and productive life.

Felons to become the next protected class? The new AFCA, Americans with Felony Convictions Act of 2010?

I am a felon too. The point of the post is that people deserve a second chance, but it is not up to the taxpayers to provide it for them

I walked out of jail and inside of 3 days I found a job with a temp service. Within 90 days I was hired full time and inside of a year and a half I was foreman of the paint department.

I didn’t expect special treatment and didn’t recieve any. What I did was work 12 or more hours per day, 7 days a week for nearly 4 months before I finally took a day off. I saw hundreds of other temps come and go in that time. LOL

Depends on what the first chance was. The war on drugs has done an incredible amount of damage to our country.

Should someone convicted of embezzlement be trusted with money again? probably not but thats not a govt decision in most cases.

Voting and such should be restored if the person has served their time.

If a person isn’t safe to be in society and trusted as such they should be in jail.

God bless you cripplecreek. I am glad to know that there are other ex-cons out their that take responsibility for themselves. I got a job (not a great job, but a job) the day after I got out of prison

Mine was felony drunk driving and despite the fact that I haven’t drank for years, I’ll probably never be a bus driver. I’m OK with that but I am irritated that an unknown illegal alien can work in an airport but I’m too much of a threat.

I personally was a drug offender (6.5 years sober now). But you make an excellent point, I think that especially goes for sex offenders.

Do Convicted Felons Deserve a Second Chance? Obama Thinks So.

I think that's cool. What do most of us have to lose? The only person who needs to worry is their next victim.
What are the chances?

The real question then becomes, what about a third chance? a fourth...? a twenty-seventh?

Do "progressives" have a limit (so long as they're sure not to be personally exposed)?
Not everyone has Secret Service protection...

That irritates me as well, not to mention all the muslims working in the airports.

I managed to avoid prison but I did several months in jail. I jumped at the first trustee position I could find so I could work my way through 9 months.

I even put it on my job application. Work is work LOL.

One more thing, the voting thing depends on which state you live in. I was convicted in Virginia and when I got out I couldn’t vote. A year ago i moved to NC, and now I can vote again. You should check with state and local laws, maybe you could figure out a way to vote again.
