"I'm Right, You're Wrong": The Culture of Mean
The Cypress Times ^ | 2/12/10 | Stacey Winder

s it just me, or have you noticed that our society is becoming more and more opinionated? Have you also noticed that we have become intolerant and unwilling to listen to other points of view? Personal attacks are running rampant. It seems like we have drawn a line in the sand and dug our heels in to show just how right we are and just how wrong everyone else is. In our quest to be right, we’re throwing the baby out with the bath water. The problem with this, of course, is that this type of stubbornness only intensifies the problem, rather than bringing about any real change.

Stacey is certainly the intellectual powerhouse. She’s just noticed this? Leftists have been dismissing counter arguments forever.

Read Sowell’s “Intellectuals and Society” lady, and put down the Oprah magazine.

The people who have dug their heels in the sand are the republicans..

I'm one of them. Back in the 90s I realized that liberals felt free to say any damned partisan thing they wanted in public, assuming everyone agreed with them and there was no other point of view. I made a conscious, and not very socially agreeable, decision to challenge any and all such arrogance no matter when and where.

That's led to some rather lively family gatherings and exchanges in supermarket lines, etc. I try to keep my responses civil and polite but I've reached the point where I'm not going to be quiet in such situations.

“You want a more civil discussion? Scale back government at all levels to where they are supposed to be.”

Don’t know about that. Have you read some of the newspapers from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries here. We had limited government and a venemous discourse. OTOH, if we adopted your proposal, we would have better government.

Oh, my God, Stacey! Where have you been? Didn’t you watch the Bork hearings? Or the Clarence Thomas hearings? Didn’t you ever pay attention to the whole Clinton presidency? Haven’t you been watching what they have been saying about Bush for the last nine years? Get your head out of your a$$!

I don’t think the law stops the left. It is fear, and only fear, that keeps them in check.

Now, people know exactly everything about countries they could not find on a map.

And what exactly qualifies this airhead to judge the Tea Party people?
