"I'm Right, You're Wrong": The Culture of Mean
The Cypress Times ^ | 2/12/10 | Stacey Winder

s it just me, or have you noticed that our society is becoming more and more opinionated? Have you also noticed that we have become intolerant and unwilling to listen to other points of view? Personal attacks are running rampant. It seems like we have drawn a line in the sand and dug our heels in to show just how right we are and just how wrong everyone else is. In our quest to be right, we’re throwing the baby out with the bath water. The problem with this, of course, is that this type of stubbornness only intensifies the problem, rather than bringing about any real change.

People are so intense because the stakes are so high. The founders never intended the consequences of government policy be a matter of life and death for citizens.

You want a more civil discussion? Scale back government at all levels to where they are supposed to be.

OKAY.... was this supposed to be like a news article? Lame even for what it is, IMHO.

I once heard Rush put it something like this: “Rather than force your view on someone, look at as an invitation to him to change his mind.” I once heard William Buckley preface one of his verbal strokes with, “Now, let me provide you the basis for considering a different view.”

It’s about time.

Compromise is defeat on an installment plan.

If your idea is to rape my wallet you bet I’m going to respond negatively with invective and maybe even name calling. Tough.

I believe that everyone has a right to free speech, and that anyone who does not agree ought to do the rest of us a favor and just shut up.

When I was in high school, I remember adults would often reply “I don't know enough to say” when asked about, say, something Henry Kissinger was doing, or whatever. Now, people know exactly everything about countries they could not find on a map.

Is this related to the whole “self esteem” push from the schools, where everyone should feel great about themselves without any link to performance or accomplishment? I think it probably does...

The people who have dug their heels in the sand are the republicans........the communists have controlled the government for decades( and when the pubs had control, it was communist lite ) and the people are sick and tired of being walked on like a damn doormat....we are fed up with talk, dialogue and civility...commies can go to hell, and we are going to either send them there, or send them into retirement...no more compromise, ever...

I’ve seen this meanness on both the right and the left. When you compare the attacks, the left wins hands down. From the left there is rarely if ever any debate, none, nada, it’s all vicious name calling, suppression of the debate as in the news media, out right lies, sometimes physical attacks and demonizing. Most of the viciousness comes from the left, it seems to be the norm for them. Where as coming from the right, it’s rare or occasional.

While this may be a worthwhile subject for discussion, the article is poorly executed.

SHUT UP, YOU STUPID JERK!!! You are wrong on so many levels that I am amazed you have the courage to even spout such an utterly vacuous and just plain ignorant string of ludicrous statements. Ignorant? HA! That is far too kind. WILLFUL, narcissistic lack of knowledge on your part can only be described as the pinnacle of intentionally self inflicted stupidity. Your obvious utter lack of comprehension of the concept of intelligent thought only causes amazement on my part that any of your sentences were even remotely complete!

Clearly the inbreeding in your family has, beyond giving your adult teeth a 6 year life span, seriously hampered your ability to remotely keep up with the normal thought and contemplation processes the rest of the human race enjoys.

BTW, did you pay for the full half hour of abuse, or was this just for the five minutes?

I hope that didn’t sound mean. ;)

(Stupid git.)

The liberals are losing the base of their power: Idiots who believe them. So they cry for bi-partisan now that it’s possible to stop them. Tough. If we ever get control of the levers of power its time to tell them to take a flying leap, to strip the left of our money. The loader they scream the more we defund and the better we laugh.

There is no moral boundary that stops the Left from killing you. Only the law.

The rule of law to the left is simple: when they rule , the law only applies to whoever they feel like.

Wow. Speaking of Republicans, haven’t they been playing “nice” for years upon years? Hmmm, hasn’t worked out real well, has it.

I’ll stand by what I believe, Democrats for the most part promote through legislation and other means by brute force what is truly evil. Republicans have in their midst those who subscribe to some of the same anti-life, anti-woman, anti-freedom agenda, but not as much.

Evil is what evil does. Sorry, I’ll stand up and say that every day of the week, no hate needed to speak what is true, and there is no my truth or your truth, just THE truth. Only the Lord speaks truth with authority.

Dear Stacey: You said, "Personal attacks are running rampant. "

Are you sure? Could you be wrong? That sounds like such a blanket statement. Maybe only some of the personal attacks are running rampant, while others are maintained at an orderly rot. Or maybe some of the attacks running rampant aren't personal at all, but have a basis in business or a profession.

Perhaps you ought to reconsider your harsh, black and white stand on these issues. You don't want to be considered opinionated, do you?

So far, I don't think they're listening there, you semi-nube.

Pity, that. Perhaps this particular editorial should be required reading for FR religion forum contributors? Only semi-joking, on this one...

If the idiots don’t like being told they are wrong then maybe they should just try not being wrong, eh?
