Where has this guy testified as forensic expert?

Can you say mistrial?

Is it too late to have the NYPD revoke his pension?

I must say for a certified forensics expert this guy is clearly a danger to himself and others.

Best regards,

“I must say for a certified forensics expert this guy is clearly a danger to himself and others. “

And what else did you expect from a system wherein the Judge, the Prosecution, and the defense, all consider themselves “Brothers In The Law”?

Had I had to deal with the “expert”, my question would be “Which country allows such a gun on elephant hunts?”

The bug-eyed fool interviewing him says something like, "Wow! That's unbelievable! I mean this is the kind of gun I guess you'd use if you were trying to aim and really hit something!"

No s**t, Sherlock. That's the whole point of a gun.

With a 19” barrel and a 5.56 mm NATO round, not my idea of an “elephant gun.” What a stupid, imprecise term anyway. Just what does it mean to be an “elephant gun?” Just want to inflame emotions of the un-informed I guess.

For CNN and MSNBC, this is about as good as it gets. Surprising they even brought in and named an "expert." Usually they just use vague references to experts, reports, etc. They actually bothered to dig up this idiot...

This was being discussed over on AR15.com. General consensus is that this guy is a complete moron.

Worse, this lying FRAUD should be enough reason, all by himself, for retrials in all 300 cases he was supposedly an "expert witness" for.

Yeah...bear hunting with a .223, YEAH...!

Never have I heard a guy stretch soooo little knowledge so far. He’s just slapping on a confidence voice to paper over his thin knowlege.

It doesn’t work at all.

And are we to believe that 3,000 fps is some really unusual ballistic velocity? Very average, in fact.

The interviewer was also an idiot.

He states, “I won’t get into the math and physics of it all, just here...”, implying that he COULD do so in great detail, if he wanted to.

In fact, he CAN’T. All he does is point out that downrange the velocity of a bullet does, in fact, diminish —BIIIG DEAL.

He also shows off his head-spinning math skills by averaging 2,200 fps and 3,700 fps —BLEW MY SOCKS OFF, he did... /sarc

When I was at Southern Miss in the late 80’s there was a big push to ban assault rifles. All the media were pushing it.

One of the local TV stations had on a Hattiesburg Cop. They were interviewing him as an expert on firearms. One statement he made immediately showed him to know nothing of what he was saying.

He said the AR-15 could not be used for hunting because if you hit a deer with that cartridge there would be nothing left to eat.

Yes he really did say it.

He tries to mask his ignorance with a swooning, panicked, overwrought delivery.

He'd do the same thing with a .22 short. "The bullet is typically LEAD! LEAD!!! That's an element more dense and massive than iron!!! It's essentially depleted uranium!!!! Uranium is what destroyed Hiroshima!!!!! The bullet EXPLODES from the barrel three times faster than a Boeing 747 at TAKEOFF!!!!"

To get FPS from MPH, multiply by 1.47. It isn’t as exact as we engineers can bore people with, given a minute and a calculator, but it gets you pretty darn close.

And the result: 3000 fps is 2040.8 MPH.

I don't think that I have ever heard trigger pull described in pounds per square inch. The fool used pounds and psi interchangeably.

Unfortunately this is the kind of "expert" that often testifies particularly on behalf of the prosecution.

To use this thing you have to have some knowledge of weapons and use of weapons.

So it would take five or ten minutes of reading the manual to know that you don't put rounds of ammo down the barrel like a Civil War cannon and you don't karate chop the scope to fire it. Congratulation, now you are an expert.

Actually, I just noted that 5280 is close to 1-1/2 times 3600 and called 1.5 good enough.

If he could actually DO the math and physics of it, he’d know that almost all .224 bullets extant have a really poor ballistic coefficient (BC) and they bleed off energy at a ferocious rate as they go downrange.

Kinetic energy is 0.5 * Mass * Velocity^2, so as the velocity bleeds off from a poor BC, we get a geometric drop in the kinetic energy.

This is why those of us who have been ‘round and ‘round and ‘round the ballistics issue in hunting eventually all come back to the idea that “mass is your friend” - because while your bullets lose velocity on their way downrange, they don’t typically lose mass.

Which is why I’d much rather hunt elephants (or anything else large) with a .45-70 launching a 400 to 500gr pill at 1700 down to 1350fps instead of a .223 launching a 55gr pill at 3000 fps. Sure, the .45-70 has a trajectory like a mortar. But when the bullet gets downrange... it will do something, even if it is down to 800fps. A .223 bled down to 1000 fps is down to .22LR velocities — and will likely deliver .22LR results.

To convert to MPH, you buy a hewlet packard hp50g calculator and enter the number then go to the velocity menue and find the appropriate units.

Maybe the newbies and the wet-behind-the-ears twerps.

When I was going to school, the HP-41C had just come out. To prevent cheating, many professors responded to the programmable calculator by changing all the numbers on tests to be some multiple of 1, 2, 5 or 10, so that the arithmetic on the test became very east to do by hand. Then they increased the amount of reckoning you needed to do to get the answer.

The last thing they did was make everyone memorize constants: pi, e, natural and common logs of 0 through 10, and all manner of natural constants.

FPS to MPH was one of those constants.

Still, I keep my HP-41CV to this day. I intend to be buried with it.

There are some round-nosed lead bullet molds available in .224, and Corbin has some swage dies for round nosed pills in .224.

I’ll admit they’re hardly common (and they’d make an already low BC even lower), but if you really, really want a round nosed .224 pill, you can get or make one.

I noticed the same thing. He was making up s**t as fast as he could spew it. You could tell he was tap-dancing the moment he started talking about bullet velocity. He put his mouth on autopilot while he racked his feeble brain for some numbers relative to the .223. He couldn’t find anything so he just spat out a broad range of numbers and said it depended on the type of bullet “round-nosed etc.” It’s the kind of BS a kid in high school will make up on the fly for a test when he hasn’t studied the material but wants to sound like he does.

My hp 48SX died about 4 years ago and I just broke down and bought a new hp 50g last year.

HPs don’t last like they did back in the seventies. Seems you can count on about 15 to 20 years of daily usage. then das kaput.

I especially liked the parts where he imagined that a sear can’t release if a rifle is dropped, and that a Kalsihnikov type rifle was designed for someone other than an illiterate Russian peasant to operate it. We have fun with such people when they come in the store.

Actually it does. 3000 ft/sec * 3600 sec/hour * 1/5280 miles/ft = 2045 miles/hour.

But otherwise he's an idiot, throwing around both a lot of monkey pooh, and some scary sounding numbers.

None of which has much to do with whether the guy deliberately or accidentally shot his girlfriend. Just looking at him, I'd say Guilty as Hell.

early story here) But that's a matter for the jury to decide. They apparently agreed with my assessment They gave him life. I'd have been a bit more severe, except that apparently that was the max sentence given the charges.

I imagine the neighbors were glad it wasn't really an elephant gun.
