It has gotten to the point where I wince every time I hear or read someone calling for the restoration of civility in American politics. Such plaints are either naive or sinister mostly, I suspect, the latter, since civility in the context of politics is a code word which means putting the muzzle on the opposition.

The time for civility is over.
No one ever got anything done by being nice.
It’s like the slave trader shaming the slave about his attitude as he slaps on the manacles.
Republicans are never going to score any points by being nice or trying to appear "kinder and gentler". We need to treat this as a bloodsport. The Democrats are at war with this country's founding principles, and we need to push for them to lose every political battle, 100% of the time.
Our country is hurtling towards a civil war. In my mind the new civility means allowing your POWs to write a final letter home, explaining their crimes and apologizing to America, before they are executed.
The civility in this case is informing their loved ones what happened to the body.
They say once civility is gone so is the society. I think our side has been trying to hold onto it for a long time. We need to cut our losses and move it to the next stage.
Seems many on this thread see civility, courtesy or just common decency as a sign of weakness and rancor as a sign of strength. That is far from the case and I know, and have known, many people who would very quickly prove that.
Perhaps this should be examined with a little more thought, instead of knee jerk reaction.
The call for civility comes with the call for bi-partisanship.
Neither are honest;
-True civility is required by our laws and doesn’t have to be appealed for.
-The true goal is to get the opposition to compromise their principles.
-Every compromise conservatives have made in the name of bipartisanship or civility is a victory for the destruction of our republic at the hands of those who never really believed in it.
“They say once civility is gone so is the society. I think our side has been trying to hold onto it for a long time. We need to cut our losses and move it to the next stage.”
There seems that the current condition of our society proves that to be essentially true.
Again there seems to be confusion about confronting agression and treating people with respect in our daily activities. There is a difference and I see no indication that rude people have no advantage when the cuttin & shootin starts.
Very true. There's a saying that goes something like; "Be polite, be courteous, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet."
