"GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH", BY PATRICK HENRY, 235 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH
THE FREEDOM POST ^ | March 15, 2010 | Matthew Burke

This month marks the 235th anniversary of Patrick Henry's famous, "Give me liberty, or give me death!", speech. Given without notes or teleprompter, Patrick Henry's words showed the depth of his conviction and passion in opposing the tyranny of British rule. A couple of sentences caught my eye: "Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope", reminded me of a recent political campaign (tongue in cheek), and "The war is inevitable -- and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come!", reminded me of the modern version of throwing down the gauntlet, or drawing a line in the sand, "Bring it!"....

Great Post!

I live about 15 miles from St. John’s Episcopal Church.

(Where Patrick Henry gave his speech)

I moved to Virginia in 1958 and learned the speech, and, still remember it.

“Men may cry peace! Peace! But, there is no peace. Is life so dear and peace so sweet to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? I know not course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Still stirring words to this day.

How blessed our country has been to have such citizens as Patrick Henry.

A bit of Patrick Kennedy’s meltdown in the House last week was being played on the radio as I was reading this stirring rhetoric of Patrick Henry.

The contrast is either suicidally depressing, or
a new call to fight for our freedom - from our own government this time!

And that is why most American school texts do not include those words. Can’t have the children believing in American exceptionalism, you know. It might actually make them proud to be Americans.

One of my ancestors lived in Loudon County during the Revolution, just a few miles up the road from my current house. Whenever things in the country get really discouraging and I think about just sitting down and shutting up, I remember that he left his wife and three young children to serve in the Virginia militia - and then straighten up and carry on. Other ancestors were in Pennsylvania and South Carolina doing essentially the same thing.

How many times do we have to remind certain idiots that they would not even BE in a position to complain about this country if people better than they had just sat back and done nothing?

BTW - answering “American” to the race question in the 2010 Census because no citizen should consider himself a hyphenated American.
