CNN's Jeffrey Toobin interviewed Stevens for The New Yorker and believes that Justice Stevens' retirement will come before his 90th birthday on April 20th...Stevens was nominated by Gerald Ford in 1975....The hits just keep on comin'....

He’s gotta do it before Congress goes home for the campaign. Otherwise, his successor will have to contend with a GOP Senate.
When a Republican appoints a SC Justice, there’s a 50-50 chance the nominee will turn out to be a conservative. When a Dem appoints a justice, there’s a 100% chance he/she will be a liberal.
Liberal out, liberal in. No big whoop.
Look for Ginsberg to go too.
exactly right bwc...
It will be interesting if Obama is a one term president who appoints 3 Supreme Court justices. Anyone know if that’s ever happened before?
90 year old liberal out, 45 year old liberal in. BIG BIG WHOOP ... country lost for another generation ... election 2008: the die was cast for the future.
Obama: at minimum 3 nominations. Sotomayer will be the least damaging of the 3.
I’m pretty sure Nixon appointed 4 in his 1st term. Burger in 69, Blackmun in 70, and Powell and Rehnquist in 71. Of course, just our luck, only Rehnquist turned out to be a solid conservative. 1 for 4. How is that possible?
Reagan named 3 in his 2nd term. Scalia in 86, Rehnquist to replace Burger in 86, and Kennedy in 87 after Bork and Ginsberg went down.
Stevens clearly wants to leave while the dems still have a huge majority in the Senate.
If Obama adds more of his buddies to the court, those court challenges to “health care reform” may be doomed.
not necessarily so. the degree of liberalism in these SC justices vary. you can bet Obama will apoint someone radical
It is obvious that Obama is using Toobin to push Steven out before the 2010 election.
And in 2011 Obama will get to pick a replacement for Ginsburg and if he wins a second term, he will likely get to replace Scalia.
Except that they could be there for the next 30 years.
Not sure about holds...but there are three ways to keep the nominee from being approved:
1. At least one member of the minority must vote to get the nominee out of committee. (that actually might be for legislation, not judge nominees...will have to check)
2. Once the nominee gets out of committee, debate can be ended with 60 senators voting in the affirmative for invoking cloture. The Donkeys have 59...but I totally count on some kind of "go along to get along" republican to provide the 60th vote...Grahamnesty, McCain, Collins, Snow, or someone else...
3. Once debate is ended, it's a done deal. all they'd need is 50+1.
Stevens is the most liberal member of the court, with the possible exception of Ginsberg, who is very stupid. Stevens is smart. If they are this anxious to get rid of him, they must have a real marxist in mind as his replacement.
