In the May 3, 2010, issue of New York, Gabriel Sherman profiles Sarah Palin's career since resigning the governorship of Alaska. Sherman recounts how Palin has built her media appeal and done so to her own profit. Quoting Sherman, "The numbers are staggering.
Over the past year, Palin has amassed a $12 million fortune and shows no sign of slowing down." She has contracted her media appearances for 3 years with Fox ($1 million a year), a cable show to TLC for $1 million per episode, $7 million with HarperCollins for her autobiography, and speaking fees that can range up to $100,000 per event. Sherman's editorial handle on this business success is that Palin is shrewd and a canny promoter of herself. So canny that he calls her self-promotion making a Palin "brand".
The political point of the "branding" thesis is in the open. Sherman says, sometimes indirectly, sometimes by quoting others, that Palin is not intelligent, has no depth, and is a fake. Basically, she's just a street hustler from Alaska, quick on the dodge, charming you while she puts her hand in your back pocket and steals your wallet.
If Palin were from New York City, of course, the thesis in New York magazine would be quite different in point. She would be a female Trump developing a public personality, using that personality effectively to make deals and raise money, climbing the ladder of upward mobility. Her ability to make deals, to win contracts, to build her fortune would be admired and her success celebrated. For the truth about New York magazine is that it is riven by insecurity. The magazine's insecurity reflects New York City's own insecurity
So New York City and the city's media puffballs pay inordinate attention to its local self-made men and women, because their self-made success would prove that you can--or someone could--still make it in New York. That New York City is still the place where "it" happens.
In truth, New York City is a stinking sink of national welfare. In the Great Depression, a third of all New Deal public relief funds went to New York City. The city never weaned itself from the public trough, never re-invented itself to become a Houston or a Denver. So what it has had to do is live in its distant past, an old star painting her face over and over, and hide the ugly truth.
And the ugly truth, from the point of view of New York City, about Sarah Palin--a bright, vivacious person with nothing fake about her at all, a politically astute, natural leader,a decent person of honest, traditional convictions, who is treading a traditional American path of upward mobility and public service by earning her credentials, rather than inheriting them from family or school--I say, the ugly truth about Sarah Palin from the point of New York City is that such a charismatic person isn't doing it in New York City.
