Why Conservatives Love the Founders
American Thinker ^ | 5-16-10 | James Lewis

A Salon writer wonders, "What's the conservative fetish with the Founding Fathers?"

It's because we read history, my sadly ignorant friend. So did the Founders.

History is full of Obamas, and the people who idolized such power-hungry self-glorifying narcissists. The Founders understood human history in their very bones, because they read history from the Bible to the Roman Empire, Europe's bloody and tyrannical history, and the Americas. If you want to understand Obama, just look at any idolized hero in Latin America: Chavez, Fidel, Bolivar, Juan Peron. Look at European monarchs. Look at Napoleon.

Get the microscope out for this small point.

John Taylor Gatto in Weapons of Mass Instruction, indicated that the Civil War had very little to do with Emancipation but installing the German way of schooling. Was/is he exaggerating?

Conservatives have “Founding Father Fetish” because they understand that the US Constitution is a landmark document enshrining the rights of the individual in history. The US Constitution is an epic victory of the people over the powerful.

Progressive Fascists, like this Salon author, hate the US Constitution because it is the largest single obstacle to their desire to impose their emotion based political dogmas on the people.

Great article. Thanks for the ping.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on.”

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

(Chorus)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

Total BS.

Slavery was the driving issue for the leaders of the Southern Secessionist movement.

It was not the only issue but it was the key issue in the US Civil War.

Without the divisive issue of slavery dividing the politics north and south all the other issues would of been resolved via political consensus and comprise. Only the issue of Slavery was the “irreconcilable issue” that dived North and South

I believe that it was more the idea that Yankee Carpetbaggers could not come down South and force their morals/beliefs on Southerners. Yes, it was partly because of slavery, but most Southerners just didn’t like Yankees telling them what to do. Needless to say, it got worse after the war with reconstruction. And, it never really ends, the Yankees just love to tell their idiot Redneck Southerners(/s) how to live (for an example, see forced busing.)

Carpetbaggers are a produce of Reconstruction and the post Civil war USA, they did not exist in the antebellum period.

Slavery was the economic engine. The fight was over which side would gain the upper hand in the government; the previous compromises (Missouri, 1850) were geared toward maintaining balance between southern (slave/agriculture) and northern (industrial).

The fight really boiled down to economic control of the country. The south had the albatross around its neck and the north had a vested interest in forcing the issue. Everywhere else the “peculiar institution” had been phased out without a fight and with previous slave owners being compensated for giving up their investments.

The creep of a stronger centralized government has been steady since the ratification of the Constitution. What we are seeing today, I believe, is just another step toward the “perfect” (/s) centralized government. The irony to me is that one slave system has been traded for another.

the responsibilities as well. That's another reason why the liberals don't like it.

Economics are not what motivated Abraham Lincoln to get back into politics in the 1850. Economics were not what motivated men to butcher each other in “bleeding Kansas”, Economics was not the motivation for men like Edward Ruffin, Jefferson David and Alexander Stephens. Economics did not lead John Brown to raid Harpers Ferry.

Only slavery had the force to move men to violence in the antebellum period. Remove that and you the US Civil War does not happen.

Remove the associated economics from slavery and there is little left.

We institute government, the Declaration says, to secure our unalienable rights.

But the power government may need to do that must be derived from our consent.

Government is thus twice limited; by its end and by its means which require our consent.

Everything the Left stands for and implements fails the test.
