For a while (say 1945 until January of 2009) it was a smart idea for up-and-coming nations to align themselves with the US. While nobody got rich fighting against the US interests during the Cold War and beyond (North Korea, North Vietnam, Nicaragua), quite a few (Germany, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Israel) became wealthy and secure while living within the protective umbrella of American power.
