Andy Rooney's Memorial Day Hit-Piece

In less than 3 minutes last night on CBS's 60 Minutes, commentator Andy Rooney essentially negated the enormous personal sacrifice of countless men and women who gave their lives for their country.

Rooney's Memorial Day commentary was nothing more than a hit-piece that minimized the nature of the sacrifice of Patriots--the notion that freedom is not free, and that freedom is worth dying for if necessary.

While giving a nod to those who died in war, Rooney stated that, 'They did not give their lives. Life was taken from them.'

In a sense, of course, he is right. Soldiers do not go into battle with the goal in mind of dying. The goal is to stay alive in order to prevent the enemy from succeeding in taking their lives.

However, Rooney went further to say that 'all war should be outlawed,' given that the goal of war is nothing more than to 'kill people.'

Perhaps you're right, but I still wonder if Occam's Razor applies. In this case, the simplest explanation may be that Rooney is a dour and bitter 91-year old man who has compiled a lifetime of resentments, while having forgotten why.

This is the kind of nonsensical thinking that underlies Obama’s insistence that we get rid of nuclear weapons and the left’s insistence that guns kill people rather than the individuals who pull the triggers. Despite overwhelming evidence during the past century of very evil men seizing the reins of power (Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Saddam Hussein), they naively believe that such individuals can be reasoned with. Therefore we should be able to “all get along.” They are convinced that so long as wise leaders such as Barack Obama are elected to handle such negotiations, we will be perfectly safe.
