Why Does the NRA Support Harry Reid?
Conservative Examiner ^ | 6/13/2010 | Anthony G. Martin

Over the past few years the National Rifle Association has made some highly questionable decisions regarding legislation in Washington and the politicians with whom it associates itself. One of the most glaring of those questionable decisions leads to this crucial question--why does the NRA support Harry Reid?

(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak). Birds of a feather--Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

Harry Reid, of course, is the U.S. Senator from Nevada who serves as Senate Majority Leader for the Democrat-controlled Congress. Reid is also the one who stated that the income tax is 'voluntary,' that extremist Leftist Elena Kagan is a good choice for the U.S. Supreme Court, that the manner in which the infamous ObamaCare bill was passed was 'open and transparent' (although it was done in secret), and believes that passing legislation to slap heavy taxes on energy consumption by American citizens in the form of the 'cap and trade' energy bill is a good thing.

The NRA has consistently endorsed Reid and gives him favorable ratings.

Here is what NRA Executive Vice-President Wayne LaPierre said about Reid, as reported in this interesting paragraph in the Las Vegas Review Journal concerning endorsements for Reid:

This is the problem with single issue groups and voters. You have to look at the whole candidate and not just your pet issue.

Couple of things. First, the NRA supposedly is solely about RTKBA. Although this should rule out any Democrat, Reid has a decent record on voting for RTKBA, although his party is the only major party trying to destroy that right.

Second, most of the guys that are serious about gun ownership whom I know insist that the NRA is not serious about RTBA, but has been infiltrated by the flakes who want "sensible gun legislation."

That said, yeah, they're endorsing Reid, and they can forget about my contributions.

They are single issue. I suppose Reid has stood with them in the past, so they are obliging.
On top of that the NRA probably finds it is good policy to support at least a couple of DIMS, so they can not be accused of being single party and loose some legal status of some sort.

Yeah, ditto. Last couple of months, I have been thinking of rejoining, after several years absence from the NRA. This decides me against it.

Reid is a toad, but he has been supportive of Gun Rights and events that he feels are convenient for his political life style. About 6 months ago the Clark County Nevada recreation department opened a large “shooting Park” that never would have been opened without Reid's influence. The NRA helped organize this shooting facility with the aid of Reid, so they are tied at the hip on this situation. Plus there might have been some “back room deal” with Reid to keep new gun legislation off the table. I think that is the answer to this story.

That may be, but I'm sure they could find a conservative Zell Miller type Democrat. Not a real Democrat, I know, but if the "inspectors" are sitting there claiming all that matters is the letter after the name, then they're stuck with that mode of analysis, too.

That is not true. But without the RTKBA, they wouldn't have much else to do.
