If the failure of President Obama to handle — or even to take serious — the BP oil spill has achieved nothing else, it has allowed certain members of the press to shed their hyper-partisanship and to begin telling it like it is with this Narcissistic president.
Peggy Noonan was surprised to learn that a man who never ran anything other than his mouth is incompetent.
From Peggy Noonan: “This is his third political disaster in his first 18 months in office. And they were all, as they say, unforced errors, meaning they were shaped by the president’s political judgment and instincts.”
But of course. He has no instincts. He’s Spock. Life is a cerebral game of chess. Kirk was the captain for a reason.
Maureen Dowd of the New York Times — as Zell Miller might put it — let her technicolor hair down today and wrote: “The two men running the White House have very different relationships with the press; one is warm and one is frosty. One’s relationship is more JFK, and one’s has self-pitying echoes of Nixon.”
Say what you want about Joe Biden, but self-pity he has none. In a presidential campaign that had many a compelling biography (First black president! Prisoner of War! Mother of Trig!) Joe Biden had a very compelling one (raising kids after the tragic traffic death of his wife) and he didn’t say boo about it. Humility is an endearing trait.
Via Maureen Dowd, a White House aide: Biden is “the most beloved person in the White House.”
Barack Obama? He is the center of his own little universe.

So he ends up regarding scribes as intrusive, conveying a distaste for what he sees as the fundamental unseriousness of a press driven by blog-around-the-clock deadlines. The 21st-century press beast is a scary multimedia monster, caught up in the trite as well as the vital, and reporters rarely can be as contemplative as the cerebral Obama would like. Sometimes on the campaign plane, I would watch Obama venture back to make small talk with the press, discussing food at an event or something light. Then I would see him literally back away a few moments later as a blast of questions and flipcams hit him.”
I would remind Maureen Dowd that the 21st century press is no different from the 20th century or 19th century.
As to constitutional lawyer, I get the feeling he studied that that document with the same contempt an atheist may attack the Bible.
She also wrote: “It hurts Obama to be a crybaby about it, and to blame the press and the ‘old Washington game’ for his own communication failures.”
From Glenn Reynolds: “The problem is, they’re not just communication failures. They’re personality failures.”
Spock is seeming to be more Valentine Michael Smith these days.
But I went off track. Maureen Dowd’s mission is to explain the relationship between the press and the president: “Now that Obama has been hit with negative press, he’s even more contemptuous.”
They send clumsy old Joe to patch things up. Obama as Nixon. Biden as Jerry Ford.
We know how that ended.
That’s kind of offensive to Nixon. Nixon won re-election in a landslide after all.
