I’d say the advice in this article is very good. Stay away from the Arab Quarter in the Old City would be an additional piece of advice.
Guns and ammo for self-defense?
I also carry a can of athlete's foot spray, given that the feets hit a different shower and tile floor each and every day.
Good to hit it when they 1st open in the morning on the 1st day of the work week - they must make that 1st sale and will often take a loss just to get it.
I wouldn't buy any meat products from there, though - hanging out in 100 degree heat covered with flies - not for the faint of heart.

I guess I disagree. The Arab "Quarter" really seems like half of the Old City, and it's pretty interesting to see. The first time or two I walked around there I was a little bit uneasy about it, but I got over it.
I think one really essential thing to have is a hat. Especially in the summer, you'll want the protection from the sun; and any hat doubles as a yarmulke!
