Skip to comments.Robert Gates running for President in 2012?

While President Obama is chatting with the ladies of the View the Defense Secretary Robert Gates gave yet another speech on leadership, this time in front of the crowd of 45 000 Boy Scouts at their Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va (DoD photo by Cherie Cullen):
There are too many places in American life today without the Boy Scouting values of self-reliance, self-control, honor, integrity and morality, Gates said. From Wall Street to Washington to our hometowns, in all our lives there are people who seek after riches or the many kinds of power without regard to what is right or true or decent.
The Defense Secretary is bashing Wall Street? Good for him! But why?
May be Robert Gates is considering a Presidential run in 2012? He already stated he may retire from DOD leadership position by the end of 2010, although the final decision is not announced yet. This would be a perfect timing to announce a run for Presidency, especially if the Surge in Afghanistan succeeds...
At the time when President Obama is looking for any excuse to avoid a simple trip to Indonesia Robert Gates is traveling around the world in hot spots like South Korea.
Gates was even dis-invited from a visit to China this is the ultimate badge of honor. Robert Gates made China throw a tantrum! It was so refreshing after watching President Obama bowing tour all around the world.
Some wonder if the massive WikiLeaks documents dump could affect a potential Gates run for President. The leaks may help the US strategy in the war in Afghanistan. How?
Imagine if the US officials keep screaming that the Pakistani government and military are corrupt the anti-American sentiment will turn such complaints against the US. Instead the Pakistani corruption is leaked through anti-war sources the world believes those have weight on the issue. So the Coalition forces can proceed with the hardest part of the Surge in Afghanistan, because the whole world can see the only partner that can give us a diplomatic solution (Pakistan) is corrupt and playing a double game.
OK this is just a conspiracy theory, but Robert Gates made his career in the CIA, so why not?
Romney/Gates 2012: Four more years for King Barry!!
I get the sense that there is great division between Gates and Obama behind the scenes. Same for Obama and Petraus and Obama and McCrystal.
You’re joking right? This guy even give milquetoasts a bad name.
None of Romney’s 5 boys went to serve - this is something that does not go well the folks during a war time.
Maybe he can shoehorn fags into the Scouts like he’s trying to do to the military
He is giving speeches recently that feels like he is going rogue and distancing himself from Washington. On the other hand who isn’t? Everybody today wants to stay away from the culture there.
Finally a few names are appearing besides the ones from times past that maybe thrown into the mix. Didn’t the Ford Exec’s name appear the other day? Which others maybe out there that are worthy of consideration?
No chance in hell he will be president.
Gates ain’t runnin’ If he were taking on an incumbent Dem, I might vote for him for Congress. That’s about the only good thing I can say about him.
What are you talking about? Mitt’s sons served by campaigning for their dad.
Just ask him:
I remember the excuse. That was so weak!
Gates is a professional bureaucrat and not a politician.
He knows how to work the bureaucracy to get power to get the things done.
the two seem interchangeable these days.
lulz, puuullleeeezzzeee..... =.=
Of course there’s a division between Gates and Obama. Gates stands for everything Obama is not.
I saw another poster call Gates “milquetoast.” Don’t let the voice or short stature fool you. This guy has a stiff backbone. Those who’ve been close to him know he’s one more than willing to take on problems and fix them.
Could it be that Obama is one of them? Gates knows the inside. He knows where the skeletons lie.
As for speaking at the Boy Scout Jamboree, he’s an Eagle.
