Video: City of Dallas Bans Signs for Small Business

Under a Dallas law enacted in 2008, businesses are prohibited from putting signs in the upper two-thirds of any window or glass door, and no more than 15 percent of any window or glass door may be covered by signs.

The only way to comply with the new ordinance is by putting tiny signs at peoples feet, which is not an effective way to advertise. The law also bans signs that cover more than 25 percent of a buildings facade. Failure to take down the signs means you are at risk to be hit with a fine up to $2,000.

It just goes on day after day, week after week, etc. It never lets up, even for a short while. Government at every level finding ways to obstruct every aspect of our lives. Sure, each and every one of them is probably laudable, taken on its own and by itself. But the cumulative effect is unmeasurable.

And it's not like our lives are getting better because of the relentless assault on our lives and our ability to earn a living. A huge percentage of the laws passed all up and down the power pecking order do nothing to solve the problem that gave rise to them, and in fact frequently just serve to make matters worse.

I have long contended there should be one more law, a law that says in order to pass a new law one has to be repealed. In fact, I would go with a loading dose for the first 10 years and make it a 10 to 1 ratio. Then gradually work it down to 1 to 1.

We have simply GOT to get some relief from the ability of our elected ‘leaders’ to take confiscate the fruits of our labor and impose a never-ending series of rules and regulations!

We have the same law in Sarasota County, FL. Retail shops are being boarded up because no one knows they exist. County officials are zealous in enforcing these unfriendly laws.
