There are one million and one “Reagan Republicans“¸ but where are the “Lincoln Republicans“?

What was the purpose of having federal troops in Charleston Harbor ? Fort Sumter was a federal facility. The troops were manning their post.
Perhaps to protect against a sneak attack from the Spanish Armada ?
Doubtful, if for no other reason than the Spanish Armada had sailed 250 years before.
Respectfully, where are you getting your history lessons....from the National Education Association ?
Would that be worse than getting it from a variety of Southern Mythology websites, as you seem to have done?

For the south, primarily an agricultural area, the use of slaves allowed southern farmers and plantation owners to meet the ever growing demand for more food by a growing nation and still keep prices low.The south was barely self-sufficient in food production. The bread basket of America at that time, and the only part exporting food products in any quantity, was the midwestern states, And they seemed to do just fine without slaves.

What was the purpose of having federal troops in Charleston Harbor ? Perhaps to protect against a sneak attack from the Spanish Armada ?Gee, then you'd have to wonder why the South Carolinians expended so much energy to get Ft. Sumter built.
The fact is that after the War of 1812, when the British fleet was able to bombard east coast cities more or less at will, James Madison called for the construction of a series of forts up and down the entire coast. Surveying for the entire project began in 1817, and the site for Sumter was chosen in 1826. Various legal hurdles--individuals claiming ownership of the shoal--were dealt with by the South Carolina legislature, which was eager to see the fort built. Actual work began in 1828. Oh, and during that whole time, John C. Calhoun of Charleston was either Vice President or Secretary of War.
So now the question has to be asked, where did you get YOUR education on the subject?

Then feel free not to read or reply anymore. But this is a public forum and you don’t get to simply announce a subject closed.

That’s all well and good.
But neither you nor non-sequiter answered the question. Why was the Lincoln government so intent on manning the Fort AFTER they were asked to leave ?
To: colonel mosby
I'm asking you to leave your house and hand it over to me.
Why haven't you left? Same reason. It was property of the United States government.

Why was the Lincoln government so intent on manning the Fort AFTER they were asked to leave ? Because it was their fort.

Ah....thank you, Bubba Ho-Tep. You’ve stumbled and mumbled upon the truth.
You’ve inadvertantly explained The War Between the States.....and the multiple quicksands we keep finding ourselves submerged in 150 years later.
To: colonel mosby
There was no stumbling and mumbling, just a simple declaration of fact. Ft. Sumter was US government property and no one in South Carolina had any right to demand its surrender. And when they chose to use force, they got more than they expected.
Just out of curiosity, the Cuban government has long demanded that Guantanamo Bay be abandoned. Would you support their right to begin shelling the base?

Lincoln was a bad president, and the beginning of the end of this Republic. An honest look at the low quality of the secession leaders is an effective cure for that kind of thinking.
To: central_va
I am sure the "Nations" ills would have occurred in the North without Lincoln. An independent South would have been spared the socialism and downward spiral.
The so-called "independent South", as you call it, began as an oppressed country already in a downward spiral.
The Confederacy was created by the same kind of people who regained control in the U.S. after Reconstruction and began ruining the U.S.A.; Democrats!
It is ridiculous to blame any of what happened after Reconstruction on Abraham Lincoln!
To: Sherman Logan
Sorry, guys, but the majority of Americans do not consider the Tea Party, Fox News, Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter to be insufficiently conservative. Anyone who thinks Americans feel this way is seriously delusional.
I might agree, but I suspect well under 25% of Americans would join me. 1/4 of the population does not win elections.
I never said the majority of Americans do.
To: Non-Sequitur
I see the Southern brand of Republicans have begun to show up.
Who is that?
To: kidd
Lincoln suspended several Constitutional protections during the war.
Would you please elaborate on exactly what Lincoln did and where? I must know what particularly you are talking about before I can reasonably respond.
To: central_va
Other than destroying the republic, states rights and killing 6000,000 in the process, I have no problem with the man.
You certainly have a deceived version of history in your head!
Abraham Lincoln did everything in his might to keep the Union, the Republic, together! And he succeeded!
How is it a state right to be allowed to succeed from the Union?
The Civil War was never about states rights, it was about a rebellion trying to keep slavery!
To: ClearCase_guy
Lincoln was a bad president, and the beginning of the end of this Republic.
This Republic has yet to end! However, if the U.S.A. does end, you could actually take it all the way back to Andrew Jackson, the first president from the Democratic Party, and blame it on him!
But, it would be more reasonable to blame it on the person who actually did it.
To: colonel mosby
Everything has gone downhill since Lincoln first took the oath of office......Teddy, Woodrow, Franklin, Lyndon....now Barack. You cant undo the damage theyve done to the Republic.........unless.........
you just start over completely, as in.....REVOLUTION !
Everything, as you call it, began to go down hill after the Reconstruction period ended and the Democrats regained control of Congress!
Because of the unique form of government the U.S.A. has, I believe we can always undo any damage that might have been done in the past; just as long as we still have that form of government. We still have that form of government!
Irregardless of what you want to think, we still have elections and we still have the U.S. Constitution ruling us, the people of the U.S.A.
What needs to be done is: Constitutionalists need to be elected into office! No more Tea Party candidates, no more moderate Republicans, no more Reagan Republicans, etc. We need Constitutionalists, as in people of the Constitution Party! We need a majority rule of Constitutionalists.
When we achieve that, if we achieve that, then the U.S.A. will be restored.
So as long as we have this form of government, we can still restore it. That is something that is so great about this, our fore-fathers built a form of government that can only be defeated when it is no longer officially in power!
