Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour cited his own leadership in the Republican Party Sunday as proof that national GOP organizations should stay out of primaries.
"Face The Nation" host Bob Schieffer asked Barbour whether the apparent defeat of yet another Republican incumbent, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, should worry the party.
Barbour responded by saying he never took sides in GOP primaries when he was head of the Republican National Committee or in his current role as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
When I was chairman of the RNC, as you mentioned, in the last decade, we never took sides in primaries," Barbour said. "We did not endorse incumbents over challengers. Same way as I'm chairman of the Republican Governors Association today."

He needs to speak with Cornyn then?
Can’t disagree with that.
Let the people choose and only then, endorse or not.
He needs to run for POTUS. Hayley pretty much gets it though there are no perfect candidates. But he should run he will bring a lot to the nomination process.
No way. The GOP establishment should select our candidates for us from their vast pool of excellent talent. Otherwise we may never have enjoyed the nourishing light of luminaries such as McCain or Romney.
Steele and Cornyn are incompetent disgraces.
Actually the GOP boss should be an extreme conservative ideologue pushing for the most conservative candidate is all primaries. If the Head of a political party isn't an ideologue then who should be?
And all primaries in all 50 states plus in all U.S. territories should be closed primaries, too. Open primaries are, continuously, helping to get the best candidates, at every political level, knocked out in the primaries.
I agree, that is the biggest problem.
Amen!
The NRSC is a different bird than the RNC.
Your point still stands, I can see the logic, Murkowski would require less financial backing from the NRSC as an incumbent with huge name recognition.
However, that dolt Cornyn must understand that building solid grass roots support is just as important as sending money.
LOL! I think you're on to something. Since we have a 'representative government,' and the representatives are just there to serve the party bosses, who better to choose our candidates? Next up: eliminate primaries altogether and move straight to the coronation ceremony.
Always liked Barbour. Never a doubt he was a party boss in the best since of the word.
Tell me, was Howard Dean not a nutty ideologue? Why does there side get to do that but not ours? Then again you probably are a moderate RINO lover.
I have no idea what you are asking nor how it relates to my sarcastic post. Did you think I was serious? Are you proposing that we have coronations?
Then again you probably are a moderate RINO lover.
Where the he$$ did you get that?
Yep, all the GOP gubernatorial candidates will be in good financial shape this year, thanks to him.
GOP Party leaders including RNC Chairman, POTUS, Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors, and State Party Chairmen, should all stay out of primaries. We lost a number of good Conservative chances thanks to the meddling in primaries by the previous administration.
What is the point of an open primary?
None that I can see.
Yeah they’re different, but the thing they both have in common under Steele and Cornyn is taking sides in GOP primaries.
