We're still a few days away from being able to share driving impressions of the 2011 Ford F-150 pickup and, more specifically, the Blue Oval's four new heavy-hauling powerplants for the '11 season. What we can share, however, are some pictures we snapped while Ford showed off what its truck was capable of.
We're especially impressed with the latest application of Ford's EcoBoost technology. As you're already aware, the 3.5-liter twin-turbo powerplant puts down 365 horsepower and a more-than-ample 420 pound-feet of torque. What those black-and-white figures don't tell you, though, is how smartly the EcoBoost engine moves the full-size F-150 down the road, even when hooked up to a suitably large trailer.
While we'll stop short of calling the EcoBoost-powered F-Series a muscle truck, but here's some pictorial evidence that it's more than capable of frying the tires off its aluminum wheels. And we're not just talking about gratuitous burnout photos either. Check the chart.

Ford. An American Legend!!
And I have never owned one. THAT is going to change
Just what I want, but that damned UAW!
Oh if only they were owned by the government. /s.
OK, so they can make a V6 that runs like a V8...... I just wish they could make one that sounds like a V8.
Of course, some pretty tall highway gears are going to have a lot to do with the the high gas mileage numbers.
Set it up some really appropriate truck gears, (say 3.73 or so) and that will come down. But, if it has good torque at low RPM those tall gears might work for most people.
We'll just have to see. I'm kinda interested in the new V10 in the F250 myself.
Twin turbo? On a Ford? That sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I wouldn’t buy a Ford even at half off the sticker.
Now this is what car buyers want.
And if a Ford truck owner is approached by a polar bear standing up on his hind legs, he won’t be so stupid as to think that he’s going to get a hug...
So you have a super-low low gear and a super-high high gear.
Big deal. Good luck trying to get the truck up to 70 in a headwind with that high end gear ratio. And I really don’t want my truck shifting out of 1st gear at 4 MPH because it is at the rev point it needs to...
“EcoBoost”???? I hate marketing people.
My F-250 7.3L Powerstroke diesel, with minor tuning changes, actually gets 24 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg carrying a 2400 lb truck camper. No estimation needed.....
Are you Chevy or a Toyota guy?
Can I drop this 3.7 liter into my Ranger? I am getting ready to roll the odometer over again and I am worried my old 4.0 liter is about to give up the ghost. It has seen some very rough service, but I have never had a problem with it.
They make good trucks.
Chevrolet - I use my GM Card Earnings all the time. To date we have used up over $16,000 buying Chevrolet vehicles.
I’ve always wished my suburban had an ‘86 Buick 3.8L Turbo motor in it for years. It has WAY more torque the the 6.0L the truck came with and would get 20 mpg instead of 13 mpg. That’s with a 25 year old motor based on a 1960’s motor. Image what GM could do with 25 years of development...Not that CEO Obama would let them, now.
The ecoboost makes 420 lbft stock, but when tweaked, like most turbos can be, it will make over 500lbft, and them more load you put on it, the more torque it makes. Going up a hill with a trailer never has been easier with a gasoline fueled truck.
With 420 lb/ft of torque under your right foot, I don’t think getting up to speed will be an issue, headwind or not.
“Good luck trying to get the truck up to 70 in a headwind with that high end gear ratio. And I really dont want my truck shifting out of 1st gear at 4 MPH”
I once had an older Porsche 911 Turbo. It was only a 4 speed and first was good until about 36 mph. Second would get you to 70 and third would crack 100. Of course it took it sweet time (in sports car terms) getting to those shift points until the Turbo kicked in. It had major Turbo lag which was actually kind of fun sometimes...
