Filmmaker Ken Burns Compares the Tea Party to Prohibitionists
Three Fingers of Politics ^ | September 29, 2010 | Stupac

What do the Tea Party and the Prohibition advocates of the 1920s have in common? To most people not much, if anything at all. However, according to Ken Burns they’re very similar. In an interview yesterday with podcast host Adam Carolla, Burns had this to say about the upstart political party:

Carolla: Prohibition as it pertains to – I guess you know a lot of people draw the comparison to drugs…

Burns: you know what it’s such a stupid parallel to draw and the reason is, yea, you could talk about that stuff, but drugs have always been parts of some very rare subculture – every culture drinks alcohol, as fermented or distilled spirits. The real connection about prohibition to me the thing that there’s nothing new under the sun is that this is a story about right-wing, single issue, campaigns that metastasize it. This is the story about the demonetization of immigrants, this is story about state and local governments complaining about unfunded mandates, this is the story about smear campaigns against Democrats, this is a story about unintended consequences, it is almost exactly what’s going on now, it’s the last gasp of Protestantism. We keep these Romans from getting their wine; you know we’ll still be able to hold on; it’s like a Tea Party thing. It’s unbelievable how….

While this is a rather odd parallel for someone to make, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Burns is an unabashed liberal who has slammed everyone from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, to former President George W. Bush, and did an 18-hour documentary on his love America’s national parks.

So while none of this comes as a surprise it’s a good reminder about the type of director we’re dealing with when we see his films.

That is true, Gates was in it. So much for credibility. Going back to the CW, still my favorite part was when one entire episode was about General Sherman tearing it up through the South. If only Burns included his famous quote about reporters being part of the enemy and deserved to be shot.

Funny, it wasn’t conservatives pining for prohibition, it was the socialists.

I'll never understand how these people can be so dense. It's the left that wants to regulate your drinking, smoking and eating. It's the left that will sue you for telling an off-color joke, it's the left that are the modern-day prohibitionists, by a country mile.

Well said.

I understand it some; it's about imposing one's ego over basic human trust and self honesty. How obviuous is it with our current President? But it would take a treatise.

So, he shouldn’t object when conservatives compare this administration to Marxists?
Our evidence for the claim is much stronger than his, after all......

So I say Ken Burns is a 8mm-propagandist-has-been video hack with a twisted up world view of America. You know, a Steven Spielberg without the talent, creativity, money, an eye for the frame of the viewer. Just an NPR leech.

Viewer Vide, compares Ken Burns to lame, one-trick pony.

The hilarious thing is he doesn’t realize that Prohibition came from the left...”Progressive” reformers who figured we had to ban alcohol so the drunken poor would learn to control themselves.

I would wager that most people that attend the Tea Parties help themselves to adult beverages.

Tea Parties are all about protecting your right to do what you want as long as it is Constitutional.

People do need to wotrry about the democrats. They are the ones who want to tell you what you can eat, what medicines you can have, and end your life if they wish to.

Another liberal faggot wetting his pants about the Tea Party. The elitist snobs are scared by the sight of average Americans standing up and rejecting liberal policies. The fags can't win a fight so they resort to lies and name calling. I can't wait until the day after the election.

Worth saying again, and you beat me to it.

For a historian, he sure doesn’t know his history in this area.

The Prohibitionists tried to impose their opinions on others, the Tea partiers just want to be left alone.
That’s just the opposite.

I will send money to the “leave me the hell alone” party.

Change to we can vote “none” and nobody wins until they get 50% plus one. If no one gets that we vote again.
