Feds Making NYCity Spend $27M to Change Lettering on Street Signs

So you are a busy federal agency with lots and lots to do. You have roads to build, bridges to reinforce, and infrastructure to shore up, but there is something gnawing at your paper pushing soul. It's those darn street signs in New York City and others. So, like a good, jackbooted government automaton, you storm down to that offending city and demand it spend $27million to change the lettering on those darn signs. I mean it's not like you have anything else to do, right?

Well, it may seem like a joke but this is precisely what has happened. The Federal Highway Administration has demanded that New York City and other cities change street signs from all upper case to upper and lower (i.e. BROADWAY to Broadway) and it is going to cost an estimated $27 million of the taxpayer’s money to do it in New York City alone.

The city reports that 11,000 signs will have been changed by the end of this fiscal year and the rest will be done by 2018.

So why is this waste of money being forced on the nation from our masters in Washington? Because the federal government has changed its street sign regulations. In all its brilliance, this federal agency has determined that all caps signs are harder to read and might cause accidents as drivers take too long to read signs while driving...

I wonder how much the all caps signs in my town will be worth in a few years. And where did I put that cordless wrench?

Hey, at least they’re not making them put the signs in Braille.

Why don’t the cities tell the feds to f*** off. Where do they get the authority to tell cities to change their lettering?

Or Spanish and then English. If there's no word in Spanish for that street well then that's just tough for the city.

“The federal government REALLY needs to be gutted.”

Absolutely. Get the Fed back to the purpose it was designed to be.

The Left is comprised of people that don’t get it. They don’t understand self government. They don’t understand any government that doesn’t subjugate, and rule. They only understand Dictator’s, Monarch’s, and Mother giving them milk and cookies, and changing their diapers period.

To gut government, and get it back to what we need it to be we have to get the damned Left, be they the radical DemocRATS, or RINO’s the “H” out, and keep them out of our government, be they elected, or be they lifer Bureaucrats period.

Why not just change the sign from PERRY to بيرّي (Perry - in Arabic)? Actually says Berry since no P in Arabic, only Farsi.

Then the Muslims at the Park 51 Mosque and the cab drivers will have no trouble at all reading the signs.

The next Republican president desperately needs to put people in charge of these agencies whose job is to 1) repeal tens of thousands of stupid, wealth stealing, job choking regulations, and 2) fire everyone in them and shut them down.

I’m assuming it will be stimulus $$$$ and they can then brag about the jobs they’ve created to repaint signs. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of the Federal Highway Administration!

Why just street signs? Pavement design changes periodically too? Why not make them rip entire roads up to change out the base course? Or from one of the Marshall mixes to superpave when that change took place several years ago?

Or hey, we could use the current item until it needs repair/replacement and then use the new design. But that will change probably 3 times during the lifetime of the original project and there’s lots of time and money to waste.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways. The MUTSET was first published in 1967 to stop things like NY using yellow stop signs. It is like the model traffic code in that the states have input. This is not someone having a brain storm at the DOT..
