Will The Youth Abandon Or Embrace Obama This Go-Around?

Will the youth of this generation be duped again? Will their votes be influenced by cool, trendy ads and liberal celebrity tweets? Will they be bought by popular singers at free concerts? Will MTV and the Get Out The Vote campaigns be enough to convince them once again to come out enmasse and vote for a man because Snoop-Dog said to?

While it’s clear that the youth vote absolutely helped Obama win the presidency, with over 24 million people between the ages of 18-29 voting in the 2008 election, some new polls are saying it won’t be happening again- at least on that scale. In fact, I recently posted and commented on a new clip circulating the country:

A whole lot of young people bought into the celebrity factor of Obama during the election season and now with 20% youth unemployment and saddled with a $118,000 debt PER PERSON from the government, they are wiping their koolaid stained lips and waking up to the facts! Better late than never to realize that elections have consequences. This is a great 30 second clip from the young people of America telling Obama in their break up message, “Then you started spending all my money and telling me what to do all the time. You are being a control freak! You wanted to my doctor, you wanted to be my banker, where are the jobs at? It’s not me…it’s definitely YOU! It’s over!“ Watch clip.

However, that certainly isn’t stopping the Obama campaign train from already doing what they can to re-solidify that vote. In fact, the AP reported:

"President Barack Obama was addressing supporters at a hip hop concert and rally Thursday night, seeking to re-energize the youth vote that helped propel him to the White House

The Democratic National Committee enlisted hip hop artist B.o.B to perform for a sold-out crowd of 3,000 at DAR Constitution Hall. The crowd also was hearing from Obama’s 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe (pluhf), and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine on the importance of the youth vote to the November elections, which are expected to be tough on Democrats."

Their tactics are shameless and often so cheesy you can’t resist a massive eye-roll. For example, take the ploy by the DNC that we’ve recently seen that involves recruiting Justin Beiber! Politico writes:

"The organization is highlighting a submission to its VoteAgain2010 video contest that argues that while Bieber can’t vote in our midterms (he’s both too young and too Canadian), shouldn’t you?

“This isn’t your standard election year video of celebrities asking you to vote,” the ad says. “It’s us, asking you to vote for celebrities who can’t, celebrities like Justin Bieber. Bieber’s too young to vote, yet whomever we elect in the 2010 midterm elections will impact his future and ours. … So tell your parents, your grandparents, your Facebook friends. … If they won’t do it for you, ask them to do it for Bieber.”

How many parents do you know who will actually cast a vote because their love-struck, pre-pubescent, teeny-bopper daughter asked them to it for Beiber? Yes, a boy that can escape to Canada and avoid the consequences of that very vote. This reeks of pathetic desperation and a possible worry that must be resonating on the heels of some of the latest Rasmussen polls that shows that the Democrats could lose at least 20 points off the youth vote.

At some point, everyone wakes up and smells the coffee…even the small-thinking youth of today. Better late than never.

American youth if they are smart should abandon Obama and the dems who have abandoned them because they have bankrupted the country with excessive spending that will bankrupt all future generations of Americans for decades to come.

Youth is entranced by novelty. I doubt that the media worship will work as well the second time around, because they’ve heard it before. That makes it old, and harder to get enthusiastic about. OTOH, there’s always new youth to replace the ones who grow up.

I love the way they, “they” being all those who bought into the Obama hype despite the prolific evidence to the contrary, now act like they can just wash their hands of the fact they were instrumental in putting into the most powerful and prestigious position on Earth the least qualified, most arrogant, narcissist that's ever held the office. I would love to be able to feel like it's time to forgive and forget, but it's way past that point.

I know there's nothing we can do to make them pay for their misdirected political enthusiasm, but it would help if they would just stay out of sight until we figure out how to minimize the damage they've done.

“to forgive and forget” in the name of “change” and forgetting Hitler’s deeds and Stalin’s and all that...

In what name indeed...

I betting on the youth not being fooled twice. Heard a lot of them say “he is not the person I thought he was and we can’t find a job.” I believe the youth of today is more conservative then the hippies running the white house. Zero is not their Hero.

The turnout won’t be as good because the midterms don’t excite them.

MY 2 youths did NOT vote for obama. I worked hard to teach them to think with their mind, not their glands.

Voting for Obama is so 2008. The youth of today will Facebook through the election and vote on what they really definitely are definitely really interested in.

“Youth is entranced by novelty”...

Very true. I wonder if the youth are hearing anything their parents are saying. If Mom and Dad lose their job(s), lose their home, lose their retirement/savings and don’t have the “extra” money for junior... maybe they will see reality. Just hoping.

If they could vote on facebook by clicking the like tab or tweet their vote they would be officially in the can for obama. But to actual get up get dressed go out and find a polling place and cast a vote? Not going to happen this time around..

Obama was a rock-star in 2008. Turns out, he was a one-hit wonder. If he were a rock star in real life, his career path would currently be at the point where he’d be singing a lounge act in an Indian Casino and / or making guest appearances on reality TV shows.

I believe the youth of today is more conservative then the hippies running the white house.

It's not necessarily ideological (yet). Typically, Americans raise celebrities to near godlike status one year, and then it's cool to mock and deride them the next. Look at Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Michael Jackson, David Hasselhoff, Vanilla Ice and thousands of other examples.

Sometimes the celebrity can recover partially if they have the ability to laugh at themselves and join in on the deriding. (Or if they have the good sense to die at an early age in some tragic manner). Obama isn't the type to poke fun at himself. This will make him an even bigger target among the Jon Stewart crowd.
