Leadership: The president misses the 10th anniversary of a terrorist attack on a U.S. warship that killed 17 American sailors as the case against its mastermind stalls. Yet there was time to meet with George Clooney.
On Tuesday, families of the sailors killed aboard the destroyer Cole as it lay at anchor in a Yemeni port gathered in Norfolk, Va., to observe the 10th anniversary of the tragedy and honor their memory. The White House issued a pro forma statement, but President Obama himself had better things to do.
He was in Washington, less than an hour away via presidential helicopter, meeting with Hollywood actor George Clooney. The insensitivity was similar to that displayed in May, when Obama chose to vacation in Chicago rather than participate in the Memorial Day observation at Arlington Cemetery. He did, though, manage to hurry back later that week to host former Beatle Paul McCartney.
On Oct. 12, 2000, as the Cole's crew lined up for chow in the ship's galley during a refueling stop, al-Qaida suicide bombers used a small craft to detonate over 1,000 pounds of explosives, tear a 40-by-40-foot hole in the ship's side, slaughter 17 U.S. sailors and injure 39 more.
In February 2009, less than three weeks after his inauguration, President Obama did meet with the 9/11 and Cole families and promised swift justice for the perpetrators of these attacks. Then Attorney General Eric Holder announced that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed would be tried in a civilian court within walking distance of Ground Zero.
The military tribunal system established under President George W. Bush was also deemed inappropriate for Abd al-Rahim Hussain Mohammed al-Nashiri, architect of the Cole attack. Charges against him were dismissed so he could be retried in civilian court.

The attack on the USS Cole was an act of war. We did nothing. It still irritates me.

Well after all, George Clooney was visiting the White House.
No time for the USS Cole Memorial.
If I had a vote in that deal, that piddling country would be ours now.
Clinton was a coward just like BO would be if it happened again. I was not a large GWB fan after a while, but I have no doubt that he would have brought down the wrath of God and the joint services on them in a heart beat.
Acts of war have gone the way of treason. Quaint, part of a bygone “unenlightened” era.
Sad.
On some Washington building, there is the saying:
“What Is Past is Prolouge”.
I think that’s another way of saying stuff comes around again. I am hoping to live to see that.
Do we value the lives of our soldiers and sailors or not?
